Hi,

I'm after some advice and feedback on Allen and Page feed.

When I first bought my TB, he was in awful condition and needed to put on weight. He was previously on A&P calm and conditioning and Baileys no4 balancer. Once he'd put on weight and was in much better condition, I found that he started to get really hot and fizzy. After many conversations with someone from the local equine store and some reviews from this forum, it was found that both can make horses a bit hot and fizzy.

After further conversations, I was recommended to put him on Dengie healthy tummy alone. However, I've found that even though his weight has been good. He's not enjoying it, rarely eats it all as he much prefers mash type feed and he doesn't look as good as before either.

As he enjoyed A&P so much ive contacted them and now been recommended A&P Care and Gain but can't really see many reviews on this feed. I'm concerned as it's high energy which I want too avoid. He's only in light work currently.

Has anyone had any experience with this feed or any recommendations at all? So many different feeds it's a bit mind blowing.

thanks in advance

How old is your TB? I can recommend Allen and Paige , they gave me great advice, if you contact them they are really helpful and will send you money off vouchers for your local feed shop to try.
I used veteran light as my TB was allergic to soya and alfalfa. A friend uses vitality with great results too

If your looking for weight gain without fizz, micronised linseed is a good route to go down

The Care and Gain was only launched last week and is aimed at veterans and ulcer horses. It will be a while before much feedback comes through. I am using it on my ulcer mare but too soon to comment.

I've got Arab's and they react to most of the complete feeds and balancers they can't have alfalfa either, I just feed emerald grass chaff, unmolassed sugar beet and add micronised linseed and vary the amount depending on how they look.

I've never had a problem with them getting silly on this so have stuck with it for years now.

A quick read of the ingredients shows that A&P Calm and Condition and Baileys No 4 both contain soya oil, whilst A&P Care and Gain has rape seed oil instead, as does Dengie Healthy Tummy. If it was the soya that triggered your horse, then the A&P Care and Gain might suit him.

I’ve only used A&P calm & condition once, it produced very ‘un calm’ behaviour and the rest of the bag was fed to the turned away gang who enjoyed playing games without a jockey trying to stay on board. Baileys No 4 seems to work well and at the moment my in work gang are doing better on it than TopSpec.

My TB wasn't keen on just chop and didn't like all alfalfa's. I found that adding sugarbeet helped to get him to eat the chop. He's on exactly the same as Pinkvboots mentions above with a balancer.

Fast fibre is a good one - makes any feed into a mash, cheap, good for weight maintenance and doesn't make them hot.
I second Fast Fibre, used it for many years on quite a variety of horses, definitely didn't make them fizzy but Calm & condition can make some a bit 'bright'. When doing more work I added Alfa-A, seemed to do the trick maintaining a balanced brain but gave enough energy for more work e.g. half a day hunting etc.

I 3rd fast fibre, it was great for my cushings mare , kept her weight on over the winter and didn’t make her more fizzy. I tried calm and condition before she was diagnosed with cushings and it made her even more loopy than usual

Calm and Condition is a competition type feed ,.if your horse isn't in enough work ,.then any feed providing lots of calories plus some starch will make the horse hot.
The Calm element refers to the fact that it doesn't contain molasses or barley ,.not that it's a calming feed.

Fast Fibre is excellent and I feed my cob on that in the summer. It is their lowest energy feed , whereas Calm and Condition is one of the highest ,.so doesn't make sense to me to go from one to the other.

Cool and Collected and Ride and Relax are both medium energy feeds , and the Veteran Light is also excellent for medium energy needs.
If your horse is in good weight now, I'd try one of those.
