I'm looking for a feed suitable for my 3 horses. I have looked and narrowed it down to Allen and page Calm and Condition or Balieys No.4, I need one that will help build muscle on my two 5 year olds (along with correct work) without giving them too much more energy! And something to put weight on my 25 year old. Any experiences with either of these? And what do you feed alongside either of them, would chaff be okay?

I switched to A&P from Baileys and I really like it. Although I feed cool & collected and Power & performance rather than calm & condition. (Different horses and different combinations and a refusal to have more than 3 feed bins!) I'd been a life long bailey's fan but had to switch when I got a barley intolerant horse about 3 years ago. But all of them look better and do better on A&P. We just feed alongside chaff with some extra linseed for weight gain on the poor do-er.

I have fed both these things. The C&C is amazing for keeping weight on. It doesn't give too much energy and it would certainly do the job. Great as an everyday basic feed, especially for your older one. The No4 I used when I needed extra. One of mine (now 23) lost weight when I had him hunting fit and was doing lots of work. The No4 gave him the extra topline and muscle building that I needed to keep him in tip top condition. Probably if you are just looking to fed them all the same thing the C&C will do the trick. Then if your youngsters look like they are needing something extra when their work increases you can always add some No4 into their feed. I feed chaff in every feed so that's not a problem. The good thing about the C&C is a little goes a long way as it soaks tons of water in so big feeds for a little amount of nuts. Always add more water than it says on the bag, mines loved it slopy!

There is no barley in Bailey's No. 4! It is based on micronised wheat and is fairly high in starch, so can make some horses a bit fizzy, but that is due to the general starch levels, not because there is any barley in there!

I've not used Calm and Condition, but use Baileys No. 4 on my husband's hunter, and have found it the best thing for keeping weight on him when he is working hard (it is higher in calories than most of the standard conditioning nuts/mixes). He is a fairly laid back horse but he is definitely livelier on this feed (as it is fairly high in starch), which is fine for him and the level of work he does, but might be a problem if you have a fizzy, sensitive animal.

I love the Calm and Condition. I've fed it over winter for about 3 years now and I have a sensative, easy stressed WB. She has always been level headed on it.
