Allen and Page Fast Fibre recall

Saw this on FB questions were asked in comments, but they really weren’t saying exactly what the problem is other than one of the ingredients and it wasn’t toxic or a dope related problem, most people didn’t think this was good enough.

Same here, except we're down to the last couple of scoops so,whatever the problem is, it's a bit late for us! It would be handy to know when that batch left the factory as if it was after we bought that bag we'd know we're in the clear. Wig has hardly any so we've had this bag since well before Christmas.

It was bags produced on 14th Jan, so by the time it's got from the factory to the shop floor, its realistically it's only going to be bags bought in the last 2 weeks or so
 
Allen and Page are rightly getting a good bashing on their FB page for not being more transparent as to exactly what the issue is. Users are very concerned.

However one caller has just extracted a little more information from them.

Just spoke to Allen&Page, the said it’s not harmful, it’s just been made with slightly different proportions of ingredients.

Affected batches (if you don’t have the bag) are darker in colour, take longer than usual to soak and the water may feel ‘gloopy’.

She said they will be updating their post as they have had a lot of calls.

I would encourage anyone to call them who is still worried, they were very helpful

Hmm, not sure why they'd need to justify a recall just based on that. Seems odd!
 
I was just reading the post on FB. Someone said they had the batch and it was dark and like play-doh when soaked. It looks like they've said it was only one ingredient that has the issue but they haven't said which. Now I'm wondering what they are hiding, some sort of horrible filler that they put in and don't want to disclose? They've said "stop feeding immediately" but if it's just one ingredient that was slightly out of spec, it wouldn't warrant that much urgency imo.

Pet food legally needs to have accurate nutritional information and ingredients
 
If an ingredient change means e.g. the protein or sugar levels are off from what’s printed/declared they legally can't sell it. Basically, the label on the bag is a legal document and if the ingredients/nutrition don’t match the 'Statutory Statement' printed on the bag, they are breaking the law. So they’re obligated to recall it. Though the way they communicated it was a bit sloppy, my suspicion is as it’s heavily marketed as a laminitic safe feed that the sugar/starch levels are off hence the dramatic advice not to feed. No idea though.
 
Pretty sure Fast Fibre is quite heavily based on unmollased sugar beet, I wondered if somewhere in their supply chain they've been sent the wrong stuff (standard molassed beet) and it's gone through production before they noticed.

If you’re not sure of the date or have lost the label, you will probably be able to get a replacement bag if you go to your feed store and explain. A friend on our yard did this; feed store phoned Allen and Page and they told feed store to give her a replacement bag anyway.

I think we're going to think the worst when we don't know what to think. It's better if they are upfront.

I feed their Veteran Vitality. I can't say I've ever thought the consistency was different to Fast Fibre. I'm concerned that maybe it's not just the FF that's affected though. It seems to be really kicking off on their post, some claiming their horses haven't been well and a couple saying they've lost their horses too which may just be a major coincidence but it is worrying.

I feed it and although I have not got the bag Im not risking it. Disappointing.

I do think if it’s not soaking right/quickly enough which seems to be the case and people have been feeding it after their usual soak times that could be an issue for them.

I know but their lack of clarity on the issue with FF doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. I would assume it's all made in the same factory and a lot of ingredients are the same, i.e. if it's an issue with the sugarbeet then that may have extended to the other feeds they make with those ingredients.
