Some horses do do a lot better when off cereals/sugars. It is amazing how well they can do on just fibre, and if they need entra energy you can add oil to their diet. Certainly worth a try, don't know what Allen and Page do but my fairly fizzy horse is now on alfalfa and fibre cubes and doing much better in it then he did on the cereal mix he started on.
I had a youngster (4 years old) who couldn't eat anything other than hay. He couldn't eat any hard feed as it gave him liquid poo! The only feed that he could tolerate was Allen & Page's Sugar and Cereal Intolerance.
What exactly is your mare's problem? Are you looking for a cereal and sugar free diet or just one to give her sparkle without fizz?
The nutritionists at Allen & Page are very helpful. I called them the other day to discuss my competition horse's feed. They asked about his current work load and diet and gave me lots of ideas and help. Why not give them a call? I think the number is on the bag.
I use A&P feeds on my two TB's, one has a sugar and barley intollerance, the other can just get a bit hot on cereals. The range is fantastic, they have something for every type of horse and I was very, very impressed with the company helpline as they understood my horses problems and what my requirements were (both Baileys and D&H had been advising me to feed endurance mix which has molasses in it and didnt seem to understand my horse cant touch the stuff).
My gelding is the intollerant one and he is fed on Ride and Relax mix which is no sugar & no barley. It also has mint and a pro-biotic in it which seems to help as all his issues have gone..! He gets Calm and Condition when needed to help keep the weight on, my fizzy mare gets the same and is much more manageable. She has also stopped windsucking after her feeds so it seems to be agreeing with her stomach too. For a bit of oomph we use Soya Oil.
Give A&P a call or an email and discuss your requirements, as I said i have always found them very helpful and after using the feeds very happily all year I would definately recommend them.
Thanks for all your comments. It was the A+P Helpline that advised I give it a try which I will. Think I just needed a bit more convincing as she's only on 2/3 scoop of D+H pasture Nuts and a scoop of HIFI a day ( in 2 feeds) as is so I wasn't sure if the Cereral and Sugare Free Mix would make much difference to her, but worth a go. I know they have a very good repuatation as a feed company.
