Allergic reaction to injection?

My 17 year old pony has had his tetanus and flu (combined) injection and a large lump has formed where he was injected (two days after the injection). He is quite lethargic and did go off his hay but he’s eating again now. I gave him two sachets of Bute this morning and it has made no difference. This has never happened to him before. Should I get the vet out?

Sometimes they can react to the jab if the vets are using a new type/batch of vaccine. My old mare once had a reaction resulting in her not being able to lower her neck for two days! They used a different vaccine batch on her the following year and had no problems.

Id just keep a close eye, long as his eating and drinking etc should be fine. I’d make your vets aware though that he has had a reaction so they make a note of it so next time don’t use the same batch of vaccine they did this time round.

This is not uncommon. One of ours always reacts in this way. We give bute the night before and for 24hrs after jab and he's been ok for 20 years.

Let the vet know and ask their advice too. If he was off food and is now eating again it sounds as though he is heading in the right direction.

I had one have a severe reaction about ten years ago- he collapsed and developed a massively high temperature, it was awful.

Diva developed lumps on her neck after the last two jabs and they haven't gone, one being now a year old. Very annoying, but they don't bother her.

Yes, Dizz had a reaction like you described in Jan when his jabs were done. I called the vet to ask for advice who said to raise his food up if he was struggling to put his head down (he wasn't) and they looked up the batch number to inform the drug company. Apparently if you have any issues which involve the vet being called, the drug company will pay the bill. That may be a myth though, just what I heard.

They can react to the carrier agent in the vaccine. My mare had an adverse reaction so I don't have that particular brand any more. I do know of someone who's pony was ill as a result. It was batch that had several reactors and the drug company did pay the vet bill. Do let your vet know.

It might be an infection, my vet once did an iv injection to my horse without stabbing first. When I questioned it they gave me some line about it being pointless.
Horse never before or after reacted to any jab, but that one time he did!

If they have a floppy swelling with the horse still eating etc after a jab I leave it to self heal, but any other symptoms I would call the vet.

We had one that got a deep infection from the needle, it was developing inside with little symptom outside other then the horse being a bit off colour. It left a huge hole when it burst out! Yes the vet would also want to know if it is a allergic type reaction too.

when giving im shots you should always draw back a little to make sure you haven't hit a small vein. That can also give this reaction, should clear up in a week though
