Several of our horses have suffered what we think must be an allergic reaction this year, and my two-year old 1/2 TB has had one of the most severe ... Overnight he developed what looked like tiny warts all over his muzzle, lips, and under his chin. He also has small patches of small scabs on his rib areas, and up between his hind legs and on his sheath. The patches seem to be both sore and itchy. Being stabled for a couple of days and having Fuciderm ointment on his nose has seen a big improvement.

My yard sharer's mare has had something which we think is the same reaction, both last year and this, but hers is confined to the side of her face. It spreads very rapidly and becomes a raw area with the hair falling out.

We don't know if this is a reaction to the hosts of horrid flies around this year, OR a plant in their field - or even an allergy to fly spray?

Has anyone experienced this with their horses, and had any clue as to what causes it? When my youngster goes out again he will be totally fly-rugged and masked, so I hope that will help - but only, obviously, if flies are the cause. We're puzzled ......

You might have a couple of different things going on and getting mixed up. Your horse is young and a mahoosive crop of tiny warts especially round the muzzle is very very common in youngsters. They are juvenile warts and will go entirely of their own accord as the horse's immune system matures. Not sure if your friend's horse is a youngster? Juvenile warts aren't contagious per se since an older horse will have an immune system that can deal with them. The other lumps could just be fly bites.

My horse has what looks like fly bites all over his face and neck. They've been there over a week now and are hard. He's also got a little bit of hair falling out on his face. My other two are fine so I've got no idea what's caused it exactly.
