Hi all :)

Last ditch attempt to keep my boy going through the summer months as every year come this time due to a pollen allergy he's unrideable through until October!

He'll be 9 this May so still only young & the last two summers he's been out of work due to this - since picking up a respiratory virus at our old yard which damaged him. He's been scoped & tested but the vets were rather unhelpful - agreed it was pollen & all they could offer me was a steroid based inhaler pump (not an option with him - he would kill me!)

Sooooo I've come across this allergy neutralisation offered by the company below, has anyone used them or know of someone thats used them? I cant seem to find any reviews as it seems rather new . . . .

Thanks :)

its interesting you say it only started after an infection, unlikely imho that an allergy would start like that. ive heard that sinus problems are extremely common and cause the headshaking and sensitivity problems .i think i would get another opinion :)

Its really odd as he recovered from the virus but from then on hes been exercise intolerant every spring & summer. No headshaking but stuffy, short of breath & double exhales when ridden. Very occasionally he has a cough & makes a blowing noise but from his throat as if to clear himself.

Vet who scoped said it was most likely pollen, ventipulmin did nothing & I cant use the inhaler. The vet also said allergy testing was to broad so they didnt do it at that practice. Youre right though maybe a second opinion is the way to go first.

oh i defo would get another opinion that doesnt sound right at all ! good luck i hope you get to the bottom of it

Can I just ask, is that all the info you were given? Pollen allergy? No suggestion of summer pasture associated recurrent airway obstruction?

I would be a little wary of the dermal testing, epecially if its very expensive. Dermal testing of allergy in horses (specifically for IgG levels), can be a bit hit and miss

I'm also not convinced by the theory behind it-especially as Pubmed cites "provocation-neutralization" tests as controversial

Yes thats all I was told, clean as a whistle bar slight pollen allergy. Although my mind it isnt slight when you cant ask for anymore than a slow walk when ridden. I asked about pollen testing & was fobbed off ......

So Ive been left playing with supplements & getting nowhere :(

Im glad you said that, thats the thing I can find anything on that neutralisation bar their site which is odd, dont want to take a punt with a lot of money if its controversial.

Try feeding NAF D-tox as soon as possible.
It is brilliant stuff and works by levelling the immune system.
Start with the normal dose and then increase it to double measures x 2 a day.

Fair enough- its just the symptoms and history (especially after viral infection) suggest summer pasture RAO to me.
Bit tired, so please don't take this as absolute-if it is that, ventipulmin is a bronchodilator (clenbuterol based), so unless you also give an anti-inflammatory as well such a cortocosteroid like dexamethsane until your symptoms have gone, it wont do chuff all. This dosent need to be given as inhaled for your safety!
You also need to avoid enviromental irritants, like turn out in the field and any dust when stabled.
Not a vet mind, so I could just be talking wobbly what-nots!

Thankyou! Will give anything a try! Winergy ventilate & NAF easy breathing havent touched him so far & tried other herbal things with no luck so far.

Thank you Paisley that makes sense, think I'll ring the current vet to discuss what youve said & then get another opinion if no luck. Will give the d-tox a try too in the meantime :)

What about global herbs pollen-x supplement? I used it with mare with some benefit.
Or cavalesse is another option. I'm sure some1 on forum saw good results from it- think it was box_of_frogs if u wanted 2 try PM her

we have a pony who had a bad chest infection ,we have to soak all her hay we took a plank out of the back of her stable for more air flow ,and put her on FEEDMARK clarity this a herbal product that really helped , also she has a shaving bed ,her breathing was really bad but these easy to do changes made a big difference ,she has no problems now ,I hope this helps.
