My DD is 20. At about age 10 she developed an allergy to horses which put an end to riding or being anywhere near them - she had been fine previously elthough was allergic to dogs when younger, this seemed to almost switch to horses/cats and she is now generally OK ish with most dogs. Her allergy is quite severe and antihistamines of any type don't touch the sides - facial swelling, widespread rash, wheeze, itchy throat etc, she has ended up in hospital with it a couple of times years ago as it triggered an asthma attack.

Does anyone know about any new fangled treatment or therapies that could help with this? Her new partner has got horses and she is finding the situation really frustrating!

There are allergy clinics where they attempt to desensitise a patient over the course of several weeks: https://www.allergycliniclondon.co.uk/immunotherapy/. I had a successful immunotherapy treatment when I lived in France. It might be worth seeing whether she can be referred by her GP as her reaction is so severe, otherwise she will have to have it done privately.

Cats make allergies to other things much worse. Get rid of the cat!

Desensitisation does seem to work. You can do it via a medically supervised method, or with regular low level exposure by other means.

We haven't had a cat since DD was about 6, she can't tolerate even being in the same house as a cat! We have one dog who she has always been fine with. I'll look into the desensitisation ?
