Turned out all the neds on the summer paddocks for the third time. All well and no runs etc. My boy became very vocal and when I went to check on him I found him flat out and black with sweat.I brought him home and called the vet who told me to give him 10cc of cortisone IM. I did so then started to hose him down all over with colkd water. His face was swollen, his lips purple and he had hot spots all over his body. he was completely freaked out and his breathing was laboured. I thought that it was a one off thing and that he had been bitten by something strange..no! Half an hour later Quinada was in the same state

. Ali the vet came out and dosed them both with anti histamines and I have to repeat it tomorrow. What I cant understand is what caused it. Both were out with their relative partners , both of which are 100% normal. The grazing is the same as last year but does contain buttercups. I always believed that BCs caused photosensitivity and not what both boys went through. Anyone got any ideas?

I couldnt find any evidence of stings etc but that doesnt mean to say that they werent stung etc. Yes, the inside of their lips were congested and purple/violet in colour. Both are perfectly normal today and I turned them out on different paddocks-they came in completely normal

They haven't had access to recently fertilised grass have they, because nitrate poisoning shows as blue lips/tongue etc.
It sounds like a poison to me not an allergic reaction.
Have you checked your water supply too, because nitrates can run off other land into the water supply..

my boys had a allergy most of the winter we thought it was the hay but last week after turning him out on fresh grass he started getting lumps again, definatly somthing in the grass.
He had to have an injection which i was told was long lasting and hes fine now, lump free and not itching any more
