almost lost my boy tonight

Sitting here in tears, willie my old boy went down tonight and i really thought it was the end. Everything was normal he had his tea and went to roll like he does every night. tonight he rolled but he did get up, he has equine Epilepsy has had for six years now so we are used to him doing odd things and he was been down before but tonight was different it was like the life in eyes was going. he kept trying to get up but couldn't we manged to get a rug rolled up under him and straw so he was half sitting up. I really thought it was the end he 28 yrs old in june and has had a very hard life, i was just about to say to my mum it was time to call the vet and one last try and he got up, he was very wobbly (sp). He turned run had a look round his stable and had a drink then started eating his hay!!!

I am sitting here with all these silly things going through my head. How do you know when?
what am I going to do when his times up ?
he my world my everything oh thats a song i think!!!
we been through so much I don't want to let him down when the time cames?

Sorry so long well down if you got to the end and get whats been going on!! just need to tell someone
 
He will find a way to let you know, a look in his eyes i suppose. Good vibes, lots of hot choc, lots of cake etc go out to you making you feel better i hope ((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))

You will know when the time has come and at that time, because it will be the right time to say goodbye you will get through it, albeit a very sad time for you....

We all take on that responsibility the very first day we own our ponies/horses/dogs/cats whatever, and the real animal lovers are the ones who let them go for their well being and don't hang on to them because it's easier than letting them go.

But today is not the day for your cheeky chap who is happily munching on his hay so don't worry about it just yet....but have a hug anyway!
 
How scary for you!!

I think you will know when the time is right, he will let you know in his own little way. Tonight was obvioulsy not the night thank god as he got back up when you was about to give up hope as if to say 'errr i aint giving up that easily'!!

He is eating his hay now and is fine so try not to worry, he is just keeping you on your toes!!

now I've calmed down a bit I know that tonight wasn't the night. i've faced this more once before with will but tonight i just got a scary i guess he been doing so well. But i know he 27 yrs old going on 28 and he has done really well and has had a happy life even if its been hard at times with the Epilepsy but i think it age that catching up with him and old war wounds.
Your right about not hanging on i know that and won't i could never do that to him.
The vet will be out first thing in the morning spoke to him tonight and he says he thinks its just age catching up.

You will know when the time is right. I lost my mare last Jan and you could see her eyes there was nothing there. I made the decision and it felt right (without sounding too heartless it did). And I lost my old gelding 2 weeks ago. He went down in his stable door way and couldn't get up. He kept trying and trying but his back legs wouldn't take it. The vet came his heart rate was 120 and the vet said liver failure. Again I made the decision again (a year and 2 days to losing my mare). And again it felt right (he was 40 and everything was going). They are together now.
 
Sounds like today was not his day. Just keep an eye on him, hopefully it was just a one-off oldie moment. When they get old like this they do tend to do some weird things. Try not to worry and enjoy him as much as you can.

I can only imagine how emotional and upsetting it must be when something like tonight happens.
Thank goodness he is ok and like others have said, he will let you know when its the right time.
 
hun big hugs to you i know how you feel i have my 25 yr old had her for 21 years, she had trouble getting up rolling in the field in decem so she now goes out in the school, i keep thinking am i mean putting her in the school, she is happy eating looks v well etc but im just stopping her rolling. Im just going to wait and see what happens when she goes out in the field when weather is better. lol and like everyone says i believe we know when the time is right.
 
Poor you, glad he's ok now. I have an old girl, my first pony who's now 32 she's had epilepsy for a few years now and last year was the worst. She lost lots of weight had attacks that were getting rather to regular and very scary. But this year, fingers crossed she's bloomed. Put loads of weight on and really got her fight back.

So basically you'll know when it's right. Just enjoy him and spoil him rotten!!!

If it's any help the only 2 things i've noticed that seem to affect her are the cold, lots of rugs and she seems better, and sudden shocks such as putting the stable light on early in the maorning without talking to her first.
