Morning all :)

My mare has developed a bit of a dry cough, suppose it occurs once/twice an hour, so it's not constant, anhooo vet was on yard doing a vetting so asked him to have a quick look at her, he said it's not a chesty, its more than likely a viral/inflamation type cough caused by the time of year/changeable weather and to give her aloe vera juice.

So I trotted off and got some but forgot to ask him how to give it to her, do I just pour it into her feed or is it something that should be syringed into her mouth so she gets it as it comes ?

Also didn't ask how much to give her, she's 16.1hh WB.

Thanks.

My EDT once recommended aloe vera juice for my mare who had a tooth infection, she said just one squirt into her food.

Don't know if it would be the same for a cough though!

I used the forever living aloe juice in the past to boost the immune system of a 16.2 tb. He had 30ml once a day. He refused to eat feed with it in and wasn't easy to syringe as so runny so I used to liquidise apples and mix them with the juice then syringe it into his mouth which worked well.

Give the adult dosage stated on the bottle and just add it to the feed. Don't worry about the claims made by FLP, just look for a certified brand.

When my horse returned from nearly 3 months in hospital after severe sinus surgery and tooth removal I gave her aloe vera from aloe equine (works out cheaper when used as a long term thing). I don't know if it helped, but her sinuses have been fine since and she was bouncing! It's probably one of the things I would consider again at the first sign of any respiratory problem.
