Aloe Vera

I thought about it as my horse can be very sensitive in the stomach and he has some stiffness in his hocks. In the end, I didn't go ahead with it as A. it would have worked out very expensive and B. the pushiness of the people selling this particular brand of aloe vera put me off :D He's now on ACV and a herbal supplement and doing really well at a fraction of the cost :)

What were planning on using it for?
 
Yes I used to feed it to a pony who suffered with terrible sweet itch. It worked a treat. I used the aloe gel (it's actually a liquid) in a yellow bottle from Forever Living. I also applied aloe cream to her sore bits.
 
My Chiro Vet recommended it to me for my itchy dog but I never got around to trying it because I wasn't sure where to get it. He had steroids in the end ,which worked. If he goes like it again I will try the aloe vera as the steroids have really improved my dogs appetite!
 
Yes have used it with great success. My gelding has a low immune system and picked up viruses in the autumn when the grass became poor. Vet recommend giving him a short course at the end of summer / beginning of Autumn and (touch wood), it did the trick.

Used the forever living yellow bottle stuff. Would recommend.
 
I have used it as an aid and prevention for Laminitis, with massive uccess. You still need to be sensible with feed but it really helps overcoming it, and preventing,, as I have seen when all else filed. It is also very useful in Gel form for healing wounds and helps the hair grow back natural colour rather than white.
 
We feed human grade from Holland and Barret, with a great deal of success, sisters draught mare came to us with some ulcer symptoms, she has aloe vera with her grass chaff and is much happier and shows no symptoms of ulcers now.

Really? That's is interesting. Can i ask how much you feed, and whether you use it long term or just for short periods?
I'm interested to try it as my horse gets extremely 'squitty' when on haylage until she is out on grass throughout summer & nothing really helps.
 
We give her three full measures (those that come on the top of the bottle) we give the others one full measure, they get it all year round, as it seems to suit them all.
 
I use AloeRide for my TB. It's a powder, so v easy to use & no issues re palatability. Mine has previously had ulcers & in the 6 years I've had him, had regular gassy colic episodes that would walk off. I got him a year's subscription to AloeRide & had NO colics at all for the whole year - in about 10 days, his gut noises subsided (previously I could hear them 3 stables away) & he started passing wind (previously never did this). I ran out of AloeRide, & within 2 or 3 weeks, the super-loud gut noises were back & he had quite a nasty gassy colic that only just walked off. Got some more aloe, back to normal in 10 days or so.

Might be worth a try? They do 2 free sachets so you can check that your horse will eat it.

Is it the aloe vera juice drink from holland and barrett? Would be interested to buy a smaller bottle to start off with!

Mine is the EXACT same, have had so many vets tell me it's 'just the way he is' through winter. It does stop as soon as the spring grass comes through, but I am always on the look out for something to try and make it easier on him. He has ulcers so would definitely try the aloe vera!

Does anyone know if they can eat fresh aloe vera plant? I have a big plant in the house and my tortoise loves it - wondered if the horse would too :P
 
hi. Aloe Vera has helped my horse with her joints and muscles. I have a friend that is using it to aid her horses gut as he was always v uncomfortable when standing and this was not only not nice for her horse but affecting dressage scores. Aloe can be used to help with skin conditions providing soothing relief. It is also lovely to wash them, brilliant for greys!
 
Yes we use the juice drink, we normally just get the aloe with no flavour, but the younger appy loves it with cranberry! I wouldn't feed the whole plant as it is a purgative and those elements are removed from the drink! None of ours find it unpalatable, but I think the plant itself is too bitter for them anyway.
It's bound to be worth a try :)

MUCH cheaper than Forever Living for the same quality (inner gel only unlike the cheaper Holland & Barrett etc versions!)
£35 for 3.785 litres and the 75ml dispensing pump is genius!
The reason Forever is so expensive is not the quality, it's the fact that a zillion & one people in the 'Pyramid' have to be paid 😉
Aloequine is sold mainly into the racing industry.
