I have bought a bag on the advise of the feed merchant lady who seemed fairly knowlegable.
Good doer - so wont be giving him much
need to feed something to give him a bit more energy without fizz (he can sometimes be silly) but didnt want to go down the cereal/mix route. He has fast fibre but needs something more i think.
but since buying it i have looked on the interweb and been slightly anxious as some reports say that it has made there equine go bonkers!!!! havent opened or started it yet - so thought i would ask on here what experiences people had had....

I've fed it to 3 horses; 2 of them weren't affected at all but the third turned into a psychopath who tried to kill me!
But she is a tb who's very sensative to feed, she is only allowed chaff & linseed.

oh blimee! i was going to go down the linseed route but the lady talked me out of it and steered me towards the Alpha....
getting worried now!!! how much did you feed - am only planning to give it when i compete or doing a long schooling session...

Not sure why you are wanting to feed this to a good doer Alfafa and oil is a high energy feed oil to full of calories and Alfafa is high in protein .

I think the feed merchant lady's been on the alpha a herself. Alphalpha has a rep for making some horses a bit nutty - poss the calcium? Also why on earth she'd recommend the oil version for a good doer I have no idea!

Fed it to alot of different horses and never had an issue with it

Alfa Oil is advertised as being kg/kg the same mJ (as in energy) as competition mix which is why the feed advisor will have suggested it. But yes, it is a conditioning feed. But any high energy feed it always goingto put weight on. It's the age old feeding or enegy to a fatty problem.

Oh God!!! I dont know what to do now??? i wasnt going to give a lot due to the weight thing - dont know whether to take it back and get linseed oil - but that will be fattening too?? what about unmollased sugar beet - but will that give him the extra energy he needs??
Heeellllppppp!!!

I don't think you can expect any food to give your horse a one off boost when you want to put some fire into his belly for a competition or long schooling session. Apart from anything else, if you don't use the feed in a reasonable length of time it will go stale.

My only problem with Alfa Oil, is that my horse found it boring to eat, it is also quite sharp and stalky, I kept ramming it up my fingernails too !

I think it is very good for keeping condition on horses without making them nutty. But I don't think that is what you wanted.

As galaxy says, feeding to add energy to a good doer will always be tricky because anything energy dense will be calorific, and put weight on. Iiwy, I'd focus on increasing fitness and over all health. Long term I think this yeilds the best results.

I agree with this you need to diet a horse to their correct weight have a structured fittening programme to in crease their fitness and ability to work then think about feeding for energy if necessary .
Fatter than ideal horses are often slugs until they are the correct wieght and fit .

yes agree with the above. Have had him 6years he is fit and not overweight. He is, however a good doer, so i dont wanthim to become overweight. So you can see my dilemma....

So he's the correct wieght and fit but you want abit more sparkle when working or is he running out of energy during a longer period of work.

Or a balancer? Or even a energy mix? lots are cereal free now

Alpha a oil made my old tb FAT! So great for conditioning, wouldnt let my cob even sniff it lol he'd balloon

If it's a bit of sparkle you are wanting good old fashioned crushed oats can Not be beaten .
I would start at giving 250 grammes daily for a few days then up to 500grammes often you see a difference at 500 grammes .
I will feed up to three kilos of oats a day to a horse in hard work.
If long work endurance type energy them the Alfa A oil is perfect slow release energy.

I feed it to my TB through winter with a balancer to help keep his condition which it is great at (doesn't send him loopy at all). I don't give any extra feed through summer though while he is out 24/7 as he keeps his weight on just fine with grass! I would say Alfa A Oil is better used as a conditioner than to provide an extra energy boost and I don't think I would feed it to a good doer to be honest.

Well folks - Ive bitten the bullet and given him some this morning (not a lot) He gobbled it up so he likes the taste. We will see what happens tomorrow when i ride. It will either be ok or not - i can always stop using it and think again......
fingers crossed it does the trick xxxxxxx:)
