Alternative bedding to straw.

If the yukka bed doesnt work (see post below) I know I'll have to change ponio over to some other sort of bedding this winter.
I need something that rots down easily as all the others are on straw.
I cannot stand the smell of paper bedding, but shavings I can just about bear.
Is there anything else I can use? something easy to use, and suitable for an uneven floor. How many bales would I need to set down a small bed and keep it going each week? I've only ever mucked out straw, shavings and paper too.

we used something called bedmax (i think that was the trade name) over the winter. Compacts easily on a muck heap. Im not sure about its rotting properties as we were lucky enough to have ours shifted regularly. It does however smell gorgeous. I have a rather wet mare and even when sometimes having to be stabled full time due to the weather it smelled and looked great.

I use shredded paper and its fab. I get it from betta bedding it was a bit strange at first but now I could not use anything else. we have a small heep burning most of the time and gets burns down to nothing. I put the ash in our recycle bin

i would highly recommend easi-bed - its like Aubiose, soaks up wee well and is very clean and easy to maintain

I love bedmax too - use it on a very clean gelding and extremely messy mare with no problems. Not sure about rotting down as ours gets taken once a month.

We used 7-8 bales to set up a 12x12 stable and use 1 bale every 10 - 14 days on gelding and 1 a week for mare to keep bed 6" deep and clean

Muck it out fully daily and chuck bed up, pull bed down after work - horse are in from around 6pm - 6am

I use a flax product called jopack and mix with easibed rots down very well excellent for garden and we spread it on fields!

I wonder if you'd be able to stand AquaMax bedding? It's a bit like a sandy bed, so would be ideal for an uneven floor. It absorbs a HELL of a lot and is minimal on the mucking out as you only take droppings out daily (easiest with a good shavings fork), and wet out when needed. Although I HATE the stuff as it makes me sneeze! Also a good tip: never stand down wind of a forkful of dirty AquaMax!
I have no idea how well it rots though.

Equisorb is fabby stuff!

Rots easily, light to handle, and absorbs loads of pee!
