Alternative Bedding

I am changing my horse from full livery to DIY livery. He has been on shavings, but I am not keen to use these because of the price.
The yard aren't keen on straw because of increased disposal costs and my back-up person having an allergy.
Anyone got any ideas of alternative beddings? Also suppliers?
I don't want to use newspaper, had it before and didn't like it!

What about one of the forms of Bed-Down??

I use the chopped straw/ shavings one. It goes 1/3 further than shavings and being that Darcy has been in for all but 3 hours each day since Wed, I've only had to put 1 bale in and its nice and big again

Although, this may be an issue due to the chopped straw. Failing that they do a Rape-seed version

Both are about £6-6.80 but well worth it. I only put a bale in a week and get 3 walls and a large thick bed too.
 
I haven't heard of that Fleabite....I will look it up. Probably I would have to have the rape version. Sounds interesting. I am so out of touch with this kind of stuff as my horse has been on full for yrs!
 
I've recently changed from having a variety of different bedding in the yard: some on straw / Easibed / Bedmax but have now put them all onto Miscanthus (elephant grass) and so far am finding it very good - even for the wet horses.

I am using about one bag per stable every 10 days and have found that it deep litters very well. It is about £5.75 per bag.

I liked the Easibed but it got rather expensive and the Bedmax was not very absorbant. The straw was cheaper but took longer to muck out and does build the muckheap very quickly.
 
Bedsoft is good, this is also chopped rape straw, and I am currently experimenting with wood pellets.... which are cheaper but a little more work as you have to wet them first before using....
 
Bedmax shavings are quite a bit cheaper than other brands, I only pay about £6 for mine

Softbed is cheap too and quite nice to handle, thats about £6 too
