alternative/ natural horsemanship type folks (vent)

I'm with you all the way Annie.

Well know author and FEI big wig Roger Day does a lot of work on the ground with his horses first.

I used to specialise in training novice riders how to fix their problem horses!!! The horses weren't the problem, they had no problems whatsoever, it was the ignorant owners who'd bought horses having only ever ridden in a riding school where they arrive and the horse is already tacked up and ready to go. They think they can ride, go and buy a horse then discover its a whole new world and rapidly lose their confidence. I used to run sessions with them and their horses teaching them how to lead, how to as their horses to move away from them when they walk into the stable, manners at feed time etc etc. Again, its all common sense with a mix of BHS and NH!!!!

Spanish Riding School of Vienna spend years and years on the ground with their horses and their riders spend years on the lunge without any reins!!!!

Everyone uses some natural horsemanship (even though I hate the phrase) at some point in their horsey career, whether they know it or not.

I couldn't agree more with this statement! I read the NH articles in my horsy magazine everymonth and the NH suggestions in the problem pages and always find myself thinking - I do that naturally!!!! I do that without realising that I'm doing it - which is why I go back to an earlier statement that I made: I use NH not taught by Parelli, MR or anyone else, its taught by the horses themselves. Now you can't get more natural than that surely???

It makes absolutely no difference what level you are riding at. Many NH trainers have trained people in high level competition.

Hmmm. Weren't Karen and David O'Connor avid Parelli converts who then gave it up and went back to traditional because they weren't doing so well using that method?

Just what I heard.

I think it does matter what level you are at anyway. If you are just plodding about you don't need to ask anything of your horse so why would you need spurs and other equipment? Not all horses need it anyway, but some will - it is not always possible to ride a horse safely or effectively at a high level in a plain snaffle bridle with no other artificial aids.

I don't think there is any point boasting about how you don't use any gadgets, unless you can say you're riding at a high level and doing it without the equipment that many other riders need.
