My cob has recently decided to rub her tail against the stable door resulting in the bolt shearing off. Replacing the bolt is tricky as the door frame is made of metal so the bit the bolt goes in is welded to the frame. This bit is still in tact and my husband after lots of bad language has managed to put a replacement bolt on the door. There is a kick bolt at the bottom of the door but this only comes into play once the bolt has broken. Any suggestions greatly appreciated as I don't want to have to keep buying new bolts.

Probably be easier to try and prevent the rubbing or it will just keep happening but you could put a wooden bar accross the inside of the door hung on brackets, it might prevent the door being rubbed on so much.

Thanks I had thought of that but many years ago my horse had to be put down after striking her leg up at feed time and snapped her leg! A waste of a lovely horse.

Can you create an itching station on a more solid part of the stable? A cheap scratchy door mat nailed to the wall in the right place might encourage her to itch else where.

Presumably it's not bad itching i.e. sweet itch or pin worm or anything that needs treating?

She doesn't have sweet itch or worms, just enjoys a good rub on the door. She is a substantial girl so has some weight behind her!

We have bars across our doors for hot days. They are also great for itching - stops any stress on the bolts for anything that leans on the door..
