Any ideas what I can use instead of a hoof pick every night my horsie comes in with her high heels on and trying to get the packed ice out is a nighmare. Has ended up with a very bent hoof pick its really no use i spend more time trying to get it back into shape. I need to get the ice out before putting her in as she slids about on the rubber floor. Any ideas!

You can get really thick, strong hoof-picks from most tack shops which work better. Also, when you've got the ice out of her hooves, grease them with vaseline to stop the ice sticking in the first place.

I have the same problem, my hoof pick completely died tonight so I had to resort to a screw driver (it was used very carefully to scrape the ice away, in no way did it damage my horse before anyone bounces on me!), I think a warm bucket of water is the way to go from now on!

I use the bottle-opener attachment on my penknife. :o Mostly because a hoofpick wouldn't fit in the tiny little pocket on my breeches. It's not sharp or anything, and I only use it to get out pesky stones or snow-platforms, so I don't think there's any danger to it and my good-quality penknife is quite tough and hardwearing.
