Hi All

So feeds will soon start to increase (well start!) as we head into winter and so my thoughts turn to feeding. I have two large sports horses and both, especially one, hold weight well. Last year was all about BF feeding and this year will be the same. If and when they are ridden over winter it will only be a light hack at weekends (shoes come off, no pressure is put on oneself to ride in the winter when I cant during the week due to work commitments!)

They live out 24/7 with access to yard and stables should they choose. Last year they had adlib hay quiet late as the grass and standing foggage was good till about end of December. This year Im thinking haylage. Feed wise they got Agrobs Muesli, agrobs aspero chaff and micronised linseed (even though the muesli has micronised linseed in it) and all was well. They came out of winter hairy and a bit lighter so happy days.

The agrobs is expensive and this year I'm thinking I will stick with the muesli but will try and find an alternative to the aspero chaff and drop the micronised linseed?

Does anyone know of a good alternative to the Aspero please?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. TIA :)

I am also looking for the answer to this! My trimmer is coming next week so was going to pick her brains but might get some suggestions here first. Looking round the feed room this week other barefooters on our yard are using Halley's Just Grass and TopChop Grass, but I seem to recall it is not suitable for my lami prone pony.

I feed the Dengie meadow grass, mainly because it's cheaper than the agrobs and more readily available. It would be slightly higher in sugar than you would ideally want for a laminitic. I add Vit/min, an oil, oats and Alfa pellets as required by the horse. It works out very flexible.

I am tempted to suggest Mum tries a bag she might take hers off the ruddy hi fi that comes out in lumps then ;)

Have you looked at emerald green feeds , I am thinking of switching to the grass tastic from thunderbrooks chaff

Is it true that it is 100% just grass? I keep getting bags that say ONLY grass, but then finding it has oil in it- and I'm not planning on feeding it to horses, but to my rabbits, so after a mistake i run out of space as the bags are big and have to sell them on as stores won't take back an open bag. Currently buy small kilo bags but they are pricey and don't last that long with my munchers!

lol, no the pigs used to get a bit of aspero sometimes too.

Dodson and horrell just grass is just grass, no additives but I think the emerald one is too.

Highly nutritious, palatable chop made from the best quality fescue grass. Grass-tastic is an excellent feed for helping to build condition as well as helping toward maintaining a healthy gut, improved coat shine and general well-being. Grass-tastic contains no other ingredients, just 100% grass.

yep the emerald green is just grass with nothing added, mine prefer it to readigrass or graze on too, it's finer and smells nicer IMO! I'm using the pellets at the moment as can't get the chaff at my feed merchant, but you can order it online on the website ;)
