Having just torn the last bit of tape off my bit as it was wearing out, I went to order some more only to find it’s no longer being made !! Anyone found an alternative bit wrap? I’ve tried to just Google “latex bandage”, but it just throws up lots of ”latex free” options.

I wrap my horses bit in a chamois leather. I did try sealtex years ago, but it wasn’t as good. I cut the chamois into a strip, wrap the bit and sew the loose end. You have to briefly soak the bit in water before use to soften the chamois. Very old school, but far more effective I think

compeed blister plasters are the only decent alternative.

the fager one is crap, and chamois/vetwrap/elastoplast are not FEI legal.

you will get away with compeeds as they look so similar.

i have one that cannot be ridden without it, and although i probably have 5 years worth stashed, i keep looking for just in case alternatives!

Thank you. I do actually think I have some compeed plasters somewhere so will try them.

In the meantime I have ordered Latex Teat Bandage to see how that will work. It’s for cattle udders. Stumbled across it when googling - just don’t search “teat bandage” on Amazon or eBay as what products it gave me were rather interesting and now Amazon keeps suggesting “other products I may be interested in” which are akin to 50 Shades of Grey 🙄😳

legend, thanks!
Teat tape arrived this afternoon after I’d ridden. But I’ve wrapped my bit ready to try tomorrow. It’s not as strong as Sealtex, so you can’t stretch it as much as it just snaps. It’s more “Spongey” and really sticky. Not sure it’s going to hold up for more than one ride.

Is there an art to wrapping a bit? Is it just a case of getting it level?
Trail and error really, and depends on shape of bit. If you’re using vetwrap, then make sure you pull it as taut as possible - I tend to start from the ring moving into the middle, then back to the ring. Then repeat on the other side.
