When i bought Ziggy I went all out on the buy good buy once idea rug wise, It was a slight fail. Rambo and anything with a detachable neck tend to rub his withers. At one point last winter when he was pretty sore I bought a Mark Todd turn out.

Sadly the quality now has gone downhill since they used to make the big heavy 1200d navy combo's which sadly they no longer do. The metal ware is a bit debatable, the fabric is only 600d

However, its fixed the rubbing and, this is the best bit! he has white mane up to the poll and it spends all winter with the top section yellow or gummed up in mud, except in this rug. The extra bit over the wither Is just the best design and has killed two birds with one stone.

The bit I HATE however is the way the surcingles thread through the holes, I thought that would be good but its really not. Stood in the field in the wind the rug just blows straight up and the wind is right underneath. I could just not use the holes and I have tried that but its rubbing holes in the binding ( again not good quality)

Do any other brands have a longer neck and a section over the wither? but 1200d and just a bit better!

I'm really hesitant with Ruggles to be honest. I've only had one and it wasn't even remotely waterproof, Although from reading about them since on here i think i got incredibly unlucky as everyone else seems to really rate them now. I mean i may as well have turned my pony out in a fleece he used to come in that wet underneath.
I do wonder if it somehow skipped the waterproofing process or something!

My ruggles ones haven't been great.

I've been impressed by Swish though - both ponies dry under 50g this morning and my field is flooding we've had so much rain.

The Premier Equine Lucanta range has a high wither that has lots of padding and you can add a neck cover to it I know you said separate neck covers run his wither but this might be enough of a different arrangement to not be a problem? It looks like they only do stable rugs in that style now but you could find a second hand turnout? I have one and I've been very impressed with it. Wiggy's been in a 50g version all winter (he's the warmest horse I know!) and even in the torrential rain we've had he's been bone dry underneath. I don't know what denier it is but he's the only horse at the yard this winter who hasn't torn his rug.

I liked the Mark Todd rugs, and I have a decent Ruggles 1200d 50g turnout with a detachable neck, which has been great. But I also get on with the shires turnouts; lots of them are 1200D, could be worth a look?

Have you tried the attached neck weathabeetas? I had one for my old pony and it lasted years. It had an excellent tail flap. They don’t fit new horse so well though.
Was gonna say weatherbeeta I have 2 of the comfitec extra I think they are called and they are really lovely rugs.

I don't use necks alot but I prefer detachable and I have quite alot of rugs so I swap them around so they don't rub, mine are mainly weatherbeeta or shires and I use liners under most of them and it works well for mine.

He has a Weatherbeeta, albeit a cheaper one, that was when i realised that a combo was far better for his withers. It doesn't keep his neck clean though! when he rolls and grazes the top of his neck is exposed.
He has a Swish! I do love Swish rugs and one would be ideal but they only do combo's in heavy and I don't need that. His current Swish is LW and so its not used daily, If he does need a sheet for more than a day or so he has several to alternate and prevent the rub.
Field Masta he has (I really need to stop spending, there's a pattern here) I do like it a lot but it's bit of a weird shape for him. It's his really cold weather rug though so doesn't get a lot of use.
Shires, I have a Tempest which i use as an under rug, Its a turnout but is so light and comfortable feeling that i put it under my detatchable neck turnouts but the neck again isn't really long enough. Might look at the better ones though.

So far I am wondering PE. Such a shame they stopped the Lucanta, my other horse has an under rug and its brilliant. Their combo's might be worth a try and i get a discount which is lovely!

I'll look, are they the ones with wither padding?
He has about a million rugs which i swap all the time and am now obsessive about switching to stable rugs when he comes in to help the withers out. Its crazy though, not just a little hair rub but last winter it was hideous.

I think I've cracked that though but am really loving him not having a manky top bit of neck/mane every day.

If you’re really happy with that mark Todd, how about putting a thin rainsheet with normal surcingles, over it, which would hold the sides down.

That’s genius! Won’t cost me anything either he wears an under rug with it when it’s horrible so I can leave that off and put a thinner turnout over top!

Just in case you do decide to go for a new rug, I've been really impressed by the gallop trojan. My boy has in the past got rubbed by his Rambo Optimo on his wither and hasn't been rubbed by this one. The neck seems to be a decent length on him and goes right up to the ears. They're 1200d and it's kept him dry and warm in all these storms.

I had a couple of Masta ones for the big giant horse, they had a fixed neck of a slightly different design. Weren’t bad for the money.

This sort of design. I wasn’t keen on the surcingles but to be fair the rug didn’t move and the neck works well for ones that rub.

I like my Gallop Trojan Xtra very much but for a *really* nice long neck, the new MudRug is brilliant. And it has a belly flap so it keeps their tummy properly warm and clean. My cob has huge shoulders so lots of rugs end up tight over the withers / base of neck, but both of the above have plenty of space. If you're going to splash out I'd go MudRugs but the Xtras are a lot cheaper and fantastic value.

The Weatherbeeta comfitec ultra have the wither padding, a big detachable neck which also has a detachable fleece bit to stop draughts at the top. I've never actually used this bit, though.

If you've got rugs without neck covers which don't rub, you can use them with a snuggy turnout hood to keep the mane clean. They're more flexible than rug hoods, come right up to the ears and help with rubbing in general as they go under the rug giving some protection on the withers and shoulder.

Have you looked at the big horse shop rugs?

My big lad is in the broad fit, he is a 6'9 in WB but a 6'6 in BHS.

My sisters boy is in the regular fit and is 6'6 in that.

Snuggy hoods drive him nuts! It’s weird but he head shakes and can’t stop snorting. Won’t graze, really agitated. Super annoying as I love a Snuggy hood!

He’s not big, it’s not a tight chest problem, I mean he’s chunkier than my TB but he’s by no means a big horse.

My sisters isnt either, but he fits fine in the regular and it gives him more room than in a WB or other make.
