Just wondering if anyone has any alternatives to the "proper" stuff?

Even though it's not the cheapest to buy its not the money that is the issue, it's the fact that my nearest tack shop is, well, not so near! :P so bit of a trek to go when I run out (which is very regularly, thanks to my Connemara's uber thick mane and tail!)

I vaguely remember us using furniture polish when I was at my riding school but this was quite a few years ago so not totally sure if I've got this right

Thanks in advance x

I use pig oil and sulphur.

I pour some into an old spray bottle and just water it down enough so it doesn't clog the nozzle and bobs your uncle.

It really does help with my boys poopy tail situation, hardly any sticks and what does brushes out easily.

Watered down fabric conditioner is super cheap or human hair conditioner watered down is very good. Baby or pig oil is another thing i've used - and Pledge furniture polish!

This week I have tried watered down 'intensive' human hair conditioner, and also watered down baby oil, the human hair one seems to have worked best, and I also bought some sainsburys basics furniture polish for 31p but it smells horrid! Think I will avoid getting it on her skin if I do use it!

I wouldn't use furniture polish... it's recommended you don't spray it around children and I tend to assume that also means animals, and that it's not that good for you! Baby oil is good and for me has that nostalgic summer-with-ponies smell...

Why on earth would u use all these harsh chemicals on your horses?

I dont condition my horses manes/tails unless bathed, which happens about twice a year. They dont require it as they have healthy coats and skin.

Argan oil! A little goes a long way and you can find it cheap enough on eBay.

For heavy duty use in winter to keep tails and legs mud free, I apply liberal amounts of pig oil every 3 or so days. Mud just doesn't stick or simply slides off when brushed. Fab stuff.

When I showed my palomino years ago, I used to use baby oil as it made his white mane and tail gleam and sparkle when the light hit them.

Coconut oil, conditions, detangles and smells nice to boot, totally natural is a bonus. Buy it solid, scrape it out and melt it in your hands and wipe through.
