hi i have a mare who is very highly strung when in season. we have been fine all summer with her on nothing as its only me handling and riding her but she has to spend winter on working livery, please dont suggest anything else as this is what works this winter. anyway as she has to go back into the riding school she cant behave mareish and ive been told by the yo who used to own my mare that she wants her on something. regumate is what she used to be on but it didnt work miricules and i was wondering what the alternatives are. lists would be brilliant thanks. ive found out about marbles and pig reguamte so far but more would be greatly apreciated.

I would really recommend giving her the progesterone injection like humans have. Not all vets know about it as its a new treatment but it worked wonders on Lily. I thought maybe it hadn't worked and that she's just become nicer until it wore off. When the squirting monster returned I knew I'd done the right thing. Its prob cheaper than regumate and much more straightforward as its one injection and that lasts for three months.

I feel your pain - bigstyle!!
My big Tb chestnut mare becomes quite dangerous in her seasons and I become invisible to her - I seriously think if I wasn't ultra firm and strict she would trample me.

I've heard good things about the marble in the uterus, but know it can pop out sometimes - I might have to give this a go next year, before she kills somebody!!

thanks and yes i cant handle her without a whip

I even had her ovaries scanned to see if there was something wrong and she was genuinely in pain in season - was going to try regumate until I found out it was hundreds of pounds a month!

Fortunately the mares I had/have did not have any issues when in season but a friend of mine did use the pig regumate on her mare with success.

Apologies if this is jumping on the OP's post: - but do those of you who use a marble in your mare remove it in the winter or does it just stay in? A few people I compete with mention that marbles have been effective on their mares - I put my mare on Oestress halfway through the season and it 'may' have helped, she's not really marish, a bit squirty sometimes but that's to be expected as she's stabled in a barn with stud horses at the other end and at shows is often competing around studs - it's just that she does get very nervy. Was wondering whether a marble might be effective against the more 'emotional' response rather than the physical. It's hard to say whether Oestress has contributed to that as it's my first year with this mare - although I chose it as I believe it really helped a mare I owned a few years back. That mare was really nervy, I felt that the Oestress just took the edge off.

i dont mind any info is good info lol. did u look at trying anything else? and what where they

How old is the mare?

If she is showing in season behaviour during winter (I have one that used to), I would definitely reccomend getting her checked by your vet (scans/internal 'feel' to check for any abnormalities) preferably stud vet if your practice has one.

However, are you sure her behaviour is hormonal (during winter) or is she just upset by the change? If upset by the change of environment and routine you'd probably have more success with a calmer. Global Herbs Supacalm is one I've found to work really well on a very, very mareish mare. They also do Frisky Mare Plus which worked well with mine too (and no, I don't work for them!!) :)

shes 14 and we havnt moved her yet. she has been like this all her life and had vet checks. it is just how she is

You should remove the marble about now, & have it reinserted in March time. Much cheaper than regumate & no risks involved with handling strong hormones etc. She shouldn't really need anything over the winter.
