My 12 yr old pointer has become arthritic in his hips, struggling with getting up stairs and walking up hills etc. He is on a glucosamine supplement and a low dosage of rimadyl (50mg daily), but doesn't seem to be making a radical difference.
He is having a check up tomorrow and was just wondering if anyone had experiences of other drugs to ease the discomfort of arthritus that I could discuss with my vet.
Thanks

My old boy has just been given Metacam as rimadyl wasn't working for him and he is much better and only is given it when he needs it.

Thanks BID - are there any known side affects with metacam? I know Rimadyl has a bad press re liver damage, but I figure in an aged dog I will try most things to keep him comfortable..

Metacam for me immediately works for the any arthritic dogs I've had. Never had rimadyl. Tried previcox but a)much harder to give and b) didn't seem to make any difference.

Metacam can have similar issues to rimadyl with liver/digestive problems but my dogs have been fine on it - the old terrier will be on it for the rest of her days as she has bad hips now.

A vet nurse did mention a new product that is given once a month, might be an injection. Sorry, don't know anymore about it but might be worth asking the vet.

If you remind me :o I'll probably see her on Friday and ask then.

Cartrophan injections (normally given as a course of four) are working wonders for my old GSP with arthritis in his hocks. They can have a max of 12 in a 12 month period I believe.

Also, I switched from Cortaflex to Seraquin (down to 1 tablet a day) and also Previcox (1 tablet currently, but going to be trying to reduce that as of next week.)

Am lucky in that I have a 'for life' insurance policy that is picking up the tab for all of this.

metacam is an alternative as has been mentioned, similar precautions re long term use, but tbh with an older dog i wouldnt be worrying about that, more making them comfortable.

Brig is on Trocoxil, the once a month drug. I was horribly cynical, but it appears to work. It's not cheap but probably the same or less than daily meds. He appears pain free despite arthritis in his knuckle.

I've put my horse on nobute in the last couple of months, he is better than when he was on Danilon, I think you can give it to dogs too, worth a try

you can give dogs ibruprofen,
your vet will probably tell you not to as he wont be making any money out of you if you do, there is a book availible that tells you what human meds are safe for all types of animals and what the dosage is.
you will be suprised at what animals can have and what meds are the same, just named differently.

Thanks all - have got back from vets and the arthritus is not the issue as have diagnosed him with CDRM (neurological) - at least it is not a pain issue.
Will re-post!!

Well we are trying to stay positive! My vet has recommended a biko physio brace which is meant to work wonders, and thinks old age will get him before the CDRM will, but only time will tell.
Old age is a bugger but will come to us all.......
