So my horse is now in fancy aluminium heart bars with putty supporting her heals. She’s on in hand rehab work only, so mainly worked in the field.

The shoes are at the vet’s request to help with low grade front lameness (navicular), she’s had her feet medicated. Farrier said they won’t hold up to normal work. I’m sure he’s right. Anyone used aluminium for regular hacking?

The alternative is spider plates but tricky as no power, but the farrier and I have a plan for that.

Next step is three weeks of in hand work before going back to the vets to see progress. Will follow vets advice, just want to understand more about options.

One of my arabs have aluminium shoes i ride between 4 to 6 days a week some hacking and schooling I don't go on the roads but some of our tracks are hard, they go 5 or 6 weeks and never completely wear out I don't find them much different to iron ones really.

My late TB had aluminium shoes glued on. We hacked 4-5 times a week and I had to have him redone on a 4 weekly cycle as they wore down to virtually nothing. We did have to do a fair amount of roadwork to get to off road hacking though.

If you not on roads, concrete or tarmac they will last the same length as time as normal shoes. They wear down quickly on hard, hard surfaces.

One of our pointers wore out his aluminium shoes so quickly due to the amount of roadwork we did so he had light steel plates. Much thinner than normal shoes but laster longer than aluminium.

I have my mare in aluminium rolled heart bar shoes, they are made of aviation grade aluminium. Due to being aviation grade they wear well and on a 5 week cycle I get one refit so last 10 weeks. I only hack on roads twice a week though.

That’s good. So could last me five weeks hacking four times a week
