Am beginning to think I shouldn't have horses..

Am just a happy hacker. Bought a lovely big mare a year ago, in March she went lame, nerve blocks and xrays shows she has arthritis in her coffin joint (she is only 8). Had the joint injected and a month later she is still lame, despite corrective shoeing. Vet is coming in a week to re-inject and see what we can do next. Our other big chap who is semi-retired, came out of his stable on Friday chronically lame - he has a history of problems with his fetlock joint -vet called, administered finadyne injection and 10 powders. He is managing, but not out of the woods yet. Other oldie has Cushings and is a chronic laminitic. After 30 years of having horses and all the associated ups and downs, I really don't know how much more heartache I can take. Sorry totally self-indulgent post.

The sad thing is, we all want to do what's best for our equine friends and it usually costs us a fortune but I have to say that it would be a less happy life without them.

This time will pass and everything will get better, I bet there have been other times in the last 30 years when things have been similar(sp) Things change and we all have the rough times as payment for the good times.

Unfortunately this is just the way it goes with horses sometimes. Don't feel that Fate is picking on you - we've all felt like this at some time.

Cant help much other than to say i know exactly how you are feeling!

I have a horse who was diagnosed with arthritc changes in the foot at 6. He was on low level bute for a couple of years but eventually came off the bute and went on working til he was in his twenties. I just had to watch him on hard ground. He's 29 and gets pottery when the ground is hard and hates walking on tarmac but seeems happy.

So you never know.

Oh J - i have only just come online (hectic weekend OH's 40th birthday) Please dont dispair - i can remember when you were saying the same to me in May. It will come right as you told me with juno, she is already much much better. I asked the vet for injections after you and i last talked but the vet said they wont help much just give it time - I think she is right every day Juno is getting better and im sure your girl will be the same in a few more months, as they have the artritis in the same place. My vet told me to lightly hack every day which was hard when she wasnt quite sound but i have persevered and now can see the difference. Chin up! you are a wonderful horse owner and they are all lucky to have you! (as yu are them!!!!!) S xxxx

I'm so sorry to hear this - if you're anything like me I know you probably look after your horses immaculately and then things like this still happen - its just life I guess, but still really hard to take when you and the horses don't deserve it.
So sorry your mare with arthritis isn't better - mine is fractionally better - vet out to reassess in 5 weeks and then may have another injection or something called IRAP. Let me know how she goes and fingers crossed for all of you and neddies. Things will get better eventually - they always do, just grit your teeth and stick it out.
