Took my rising 5yo for some further education today with a very good S.J. rider. She has been coming on really well, has always jumped whats in front of her and never refused anything! Well she started schooling her, criticising the way she was going but the mare was getting very tense and unhappy so spoiling her work if you know what i mean, she started jumping her but she was a little headstrong but i personally felt it was because she looked nervous, she warmed up and we then put a reasonable sized parellell up, which she has never jumped height wise before and she didnt jump it very well, almost looked surprised at size of fence, trainer then went on to say she was gutless... she finished off on a resonable note, but i feel realy dissapointed and almost wish i hadnt taken her now as she has been going well, i really hope this isnt right, as she has never given me the feeling of being gutless... sorry to go on but feel very dissapointed, she is there for another few days so i hope she improves.

Who did you take her to? PM if you prefer.

I am on the border of Worcs and Glos and know of a very good trainer near Cheltenham if it's not too far. He's very sympathetic and brings on a few youngsters of his own and for others.

I'm sure she's not gutless, she did jump it even though she probably got the shock of her life. Hugs for you as I hate anyone critisisng my horse

That wasnt SH the guy you had a lesson with the other day was it?

Anyway whoever it was sounds pretty pathetic and is obviously not very bright

Am sure that your mare will bounce back soon!

No it isnt the guy had lesson with! I normally really respect this person as a rider, but did feel she was being a bit harsh she does jump at the very highest level. My gut instinct has always been that my mare is actually very good,.

I think you have every right to be dissapointed. Don't worry too much, I am sure they won't be jumping her everyday, leave her where she is (they are hardly negelcting her) and when she comes home pick up where you left off with her and hopefully she will be as good as you expect.
Is she a similar type to this persons normal horses and does the person geton with mares or geldings best, all of things are little details that determine decisions I make when choosing people to school my horses.
Don't take it too personally that your horse may not be the next olympic superstar, maybe she will improve as a 6 year old.

No i havent taken it personally, will leave her where she is as she has always done my other horses well in the past, i just feel she had her to wound up and the horse was worrying about the rider rather than the job in hand. I wasent thinking she was the next Olympic horse, but have ridden bought and sold enough to know a genuine horse from a bad un!

Thing with this one, she isnt quirky though! she is actually fairly laid back, and has been quite surprised at the abruptness of this morning i think, she was very stressed.

I'd go and fetch her back. If you are unhappy and the horse is obviously not happy either. It doesnt take long for somebody to ruin/change a horse. Not everybody gets on with a particular horse. Trust your gut instrinct and find somebody else.

Perhaps this trainer is just moving to fast for your horse.

Any trainer worth their weight in gold should realise this.

At the end of the day you are paying for a service and lets face it, why leave your horse there to get even possibly ruined and then you have to undo all that good work.

Is the long term prospects of this horse for you to compete or to sell on?

If for you, then I'd bring her back.

She wouldnt ruin her im sure of that, but yes you have hit nail on head, she was moving way to fast i thought and mare was very confused, it was almost the attitude of she wont bend left properly, but i pointed out well she doesnt really know what your on about, she was quite hard on her, where i have never felt the need as have always found her obliging. She is for me to keep and just felt she was very derogatory about her, she isnt 5 yet...

Yes i wished i had just carried on on my own now, maybe i wasnt doing such a bad job after all!

I agree, you've answered your own question. If she is for you to keep then surely it is better that you do it together. Your lesson seemed promising the other day, I would be tempted to both get help together or at least be there every time she is ridden by somebody else so at least you know what is going on.

Yes felt really peed because what was coming felt so good! and she has just been totally slated today, so just makes you feel demoralised...

Sure some horses are born very bold, but the majority aren't - and have to learn. Your rider doesn't sound like she has much experience with the latter. You teach bravery by building confidence, not by testing it, and there is more to lose than there is to gain by pushing your mare too fast too soon.

The lessons your mare learns now will echo throughout her whole career - so if you have any doubts get her home.

Yes thanks everyone, she is coming back today, its just that in my mind there was no major problems, now its like in trainers eyes i have major ones

but all steve hadley did the other day was commend me and her so i think im doing the right thing.

Really, I would go and get her back. Apart from anything else, what this trainer said to you indicates a complete lack of regard for your opinion and that would be enough to put me off going back. I've left horses with people a couple of times before, thinking it would be okay but feeling a bit unhappy about it. I have regretted it every time. Your horse is happy with you - just carry on doing what you're doing and if you find you're having problems later on go and find another trainer! A horse can be completely screwed up in a very short space of time, particularly with show jumping, in my experience. Even if you think she won't wreck her, surely you don't want to pay for the privilege of reschooling her when she comes home!!

Yes she is back, trainer rode her again before i left, with a completely different attitude... and she went really well, so will just crack on on my own now!
