hey

i feel terrible i have not ridden my horse since the start of december

we had really bad snow first and that has only been gone for the last 2 weeks but i have been so poorly

i was in hospital last week and this week i have a chest and sinus infection.
now i have had him in the field even when the snow was bad (i was the only livery that had a horse in the field at my place

) and this week i have loose schooled him but i feel terrible.
Am i the only person out there in this position??

You can only do what you can do, dont beat yourself up about it. At least you have still turned him out! Not turning out would be something to feel bad about.

As long as you bring him back into work slowly and make sure he is fittened up properly i wouldnt worry about it.
 
Don't worry I'm sure your horse doesn't mind! So long as he got to go out and had things to do he probably enjoyed having a holiday. Don't beat yourself up, I hope you feel better soon and can get back to riding again.

so long as your horse is warm enough, has food and water that is the main thing. I am certain there are others in your position. chin up

No you're not a bad mum, I've been the same, we had a period of about 5 weeks where we couldn't ride, the field is not fit to ride in even now and I'm not taking them out for hacks until I can burn off some of the "happiness" first lol !
 
Don't worry, I've got the farrier coming next week and haven't ridden since the last time he came (six weeks)! Horses have been out in the snow, but seem quite happy eating haylage. Got their warm rugs on and plenty of food and water.
 
I hope you are feeling better soon, don't push yourself and with him being out it will make life a bit easier.

Don't feel bad about not riding him, I'm quite sure he isn't that bothered. He won't be sitting in a corner on his cell to his mates saying "Jeez, I'm bored, we NEVER do anything" most horses only care about being able to stretch his legs, have a bit of company, get out of the weather if he chooses and that he's not hungry or thirsty. Given all that, no worries, just concentrate on getting better.

I have a mare here that hasn't been ridden for at least 14 years (she's 18) she doesn't care, although she is rather enjoying coming back into work, but she isn't rushing to the tackroom and hopping up and down waiting to be tacked up, she wouldn't care if she were never sat on again.
 
We are the same, my daughters horses hadn't been sat on since beg December! She has had glandular fever and was just sleeping.....She rode them both for the first time today and thanks goodness they were both stars!!

I am sure they never bothered not being riden tho..their priorities are food, food, food, water, shelter, warmth, food ......oh and a few cuddles (thats just cos they have no choice!)

Paddy will be happy stuffing his face and mooching round the field with his mates having a leg stretch so quit worrying about it. Concentrate on getting better so you can get back on board when the weather picks up.
 
If you are a bad mum I am beyond redemption! I rode for the first time today for about 5 months. I have had issues at work, (I have my own business), several bouts of illness, horrendous weather, and I really can't be bothered.

My boy has enjoyed lounging about in the field with his companion and looked horrified when the saddle and bridle came out today. He thought he had retired!

Once we got going,on a 20 min walk, he really enjoyed himself, checking out the changes in gardens and houses we passed since he'd last seen them. We bounced out of the yard, slowed down after 5 minutes and then power walked when we got to the half way stage, bless him. I have no arena so it means going straight out on the roads.

I am really proud of the way he behaved.

Just tell him he is having a holiday. He won't care and you will soon get back into a routine.

No you're not, and stop trying so hard to get better, it'll only slow down the recovery cos you're stressing!!

We've all been there, my front gate has been flooded for weeks so can't get out, field not really dry enough anywhere and I have chronic fatigue, so haven't ridden for a couple of months either.

Just wrap up, give your horse some special cuddles (make u feel better too!) and have a sit on one day when you feel up to it. Its a nice surprise to realise you suddenly feel well enough, instead of feeling worse because you think you should be ready.

Weather, christmas and work meant the young one wasn't ridden from the beginning of December until last weekend- he was a star bless him.

My old lad is the same- only now the crap weather has gone- he's lost a shoe- so I cant ride until the farrier has been on monday and although he's been turned out in soft fields - he's older and has lost muscle as a result.....but that will be sorted when he's back on four wheels again.

Don't beat yourself up, we're all in the same boat
