Am I asking too much of her?

For the last year I have been taking my mare to shows in my friends horsebox with friends horse. I recently got a 4x4 and trailer and my mare will load ok but seems to prefer travelling with the partition moved over to give her plenty room. She also seems a bit stressed when I unload which I think is due to the fact she is on her own in trailer.

I was hoping to take her to a dressage test on Saturday but due to work commitments will only be able to do a practice run on wed and thurs. Should I give her longer to get used to the trailer or go and see how it goes? It is about a 40 min drive.

I would carry on. If possible take the partition out and get a full breast bar at the front. Horses travel a lot better this way.

Thanks for that suggestion. My trailer is an old sinclair so will need to try and source a full breast bar.

Most companies used to do them if not a decent handyman could probably knock something up - just make sure it is well padded. I always travelled without a partition and they find it easier as they can spread there legs more.

So you don't think that it's because she is on her own? She has always been used to travelling with a companion but I would like her to get used to being alone as it's not always feasible to take a companion and if I remove partition then will definitely not be possible.

She will get used to travelling on her own and settle particularly with the partition out. Don't worry too much and go out and enjoy things.

We used to travel Bloss with no partitions in our lorry as she hated being 'boxed' in. She travelled perfectly without them (but tied up). We also put straw on the floor for her too - have you tried straw/shavings on the floor aswell?

Its best to keep getting them out and about so your mare gets used to it - she will eventually, dont worry.
