hi everyone...

i was wonderin if i could have an honest opinion from you!

i have a girl who works on my yard 3 hours a day (9-12), whos fit and able and 18yrs....

i have 7 in at the moment on rubber mats and very clean shavings on top.
in her 3 hours we ask her to muck out and fill waters for 7, change 3 rugs and do haynets...... do you think this is too much to ask or is this ok? i do the same amount of work, as well as my usual, riding, bringing in and out, feeding morning lunch and eve, rugging up eve skipping out etc. and when i do her chores i find i have more than enough time - but wanting your opinions!!! (as it never seems to all get done!!)

thanks

I'd say that's reasonable. Our three take between 45 and 1 1/4 hr to do stables, feeds x 6, hay, 2 rugs, sweep yard and water. They are also on rubber matting with shavings.

About 10 years ago, I can remember a similar scenario at a yard where I was DIY. The YTS would dawdle and take all day (she had 17 to do, mind you!) and the YO never helped her.

Now, don't take this the wrong way, but when they're young (and a biy dippy) sometimes you have to be onto them a bit, and work alongside to push them, if you leave them to it they just go slower and slower...

Personally, I think she should get all that done in two hours easy!

I would say its about right - if she saying its NOT enough time shes lying!
but much more and you would be making her job pretty miserable, if you know what i mean.

if shes not getting it all done maybe work with her on a couple of days and see where shes 'faffing' or loosing time so to speak
she may simply not be as efficient as a more experianced person?

I have 3 to do ..... I feed, change rugs, turn out and then muck out on shavings and rubber beds (properly), fill up the water in the fields, wash the buckets out and sweep little courtyard. Takes me between 45 and 1 hour 15. Nearer to longer time given that they are coming in earlier. One horse is so clean, one a pony (easy) and the other quite frankly spends all night making sure it's all over the stables and trod in for good measure (so not an easy one!).lol. So what you are asking for is totally reasonable. xx

When i helped at the yard, I had to do 10 boxes (straw) feed, haynets, water change rugs for over half of them (if they needed it!) and lots of other jobs from 8 - 12 and then from 2-3.30. This was 3 days a week during the hols and on weekends during the school year!! I was only 13/14.....

and when i was 11/12 i did 4-6 stables, got horses in, feeds, other duties and getting horses tacked up for the lessons from 8-12.30 and then in the afternoon we did other yard duties from 2 - 6! including putting horses out, feeding....etc!

So imo no your not asking too much!!
