Found a new ponio, its a showcob absolutely stunning very low mileage ticks all the boxes except 1 he's beautifully marked moves like a dream temperament of a saint (so Josh can ride him) has competed at hoys as a youngster so I know he is capable the only thing i cant get over is he is 10, he hasnt done hardly anything for the past 3 years although kept in work he hasnt exactly been overshown.
Is 10 years still very young for the showring or should I stick to my original plan of finding a young unproven???
 
I wouldn't have clue about showing so no help to you there - but for me 10 is the ideal age - got some miles on the clock and just a little bit more sensible!! It doesn't sound like he has been worked into the ground so still got plenty of life in him BUT as I say I know nothing about showing!!
 
im not really a showing person but if this cob is right and it has done showing before why not go for it as its a big risk buying a youngster
 
I personally wouldn’t worry about the age of 10. It is still quite young and you know what you are getting. You can start competing straight away without the delay of bringing on a younger model and trying to get them use to the ring.

That certainly is a benefit the fact that he can go out straight away, with the uncertainty of a youngster it may be ready of rnext sumemr but then it may take longer then i have a huge livery bill every month for getting something going, the other thingis Josh wouldnt ride until it was sane and sensible. I can see i'm talking myself into a definate maybe here.
 
It depends what level of showing you want to do - if its local level then i would not even worry about it at all - 10 isnt that old at all. My parents are hugely into showing and only show them up to around 6 as after that they are generally used at stud/broodmares or sold on with qualifications under their belt - but she travels all over the place and abroad for the 'right' shows. If its just for your own fun and your not that heavily involved in showing he sounds like a nice proven horse thatll be safe and fun without too much effort! Good Luck x
 
Oh no it is to go out with the intention of having a chance of winning hoys not local stuff. For those of you who dont know my las thorse was produced by top producer and this one will be the same
 
I think you need to think what you want to get out of your next horse ie local show or are you aiming higher hoys and how long you expect to show him and keep him.

When ever i have bought a new horse i have just felt they are the right one for me, my last horse i was looking for older horse been there do that that i could just hack out bit of ahowing ect, ended up with un broken 5yr old chestnut mare (i don't do chestnuts or mares) but she perfect for me fell in love with her
 
Wasn't Ebbw Victor 17 when he won the Royal Welsh? I know you say you don't want to show at that level, but if he can do that at that age, this one should be fine for local stuff for many years to come. I was still showing mine until he randomly developed sweet itch at 15. This is virtually unheard of as most develop it much younger so at least if he hasn't got it now he's very unlikely to develop it. You could buy a youngster only for them to develop it in a year or two, or cut themsevles and have a scar etc.
 
I dont want to do local, this would be on full show production with the intention of getting to hoys at the very least next year. Yes more dark than white and even both sides. He is gorgeous and I have complete faith he would do very well its just the age thing especially as it is such high level.

She DOES want to show at that level, she's aiming for HOYS, not local stuff.
 
Sorry misread that post, but point is the same, if Ebbw Victor could do it at that age, there's no reason why any other horse can't do it.
 
I have...he's lovely.

I'm no showing expert as you know, but if his age is the only thing putting you off then I would seriously go for it. He's capable of doing it, you know that....he's not been overworked or overproduced so he's got plenty of mileage and if his temperament is good and your son can ride him then I would go for it.
 
I think he looks very nice but if it is going to be going off to be produced then you would proberbly be best off getting a younger one, however if you are wanting someone to ride one that is sane and sensible maybe you could over look his age and go for it why not try talking to the producers yard and ask their opinions on his age, but if you are aiming to take him to hoys next year he is going to be 11 by then!
 
It is the producers who have shown him to me, he is not for sale as such. They are really excited about the propsect of having him and have seen him out and about. Its only me with the age hangup

Have you seen the youngsters that are available, there isnt a showcob on quest that I would go look at, I have seen videos of a couple and that has been it. I did see one but when i went to ring about it it had been sold, and again the other day saw another called and it had been sold. If a showcob comes on the market and it is pure quality it sells, there are not that many about so the good ones get snapped up straight away

Owner has decided she cannot sell him after all that, so I guess it just wasnt meant to be. I know how she feels mind and she didnt keep me hanging on or let me get it vetted then change her mind
Back to the drawing board!
I can see me getting stalled of this horse searching! Anyone know of any top quality horses for sale that want a lovely home let me know!

Have you been to look at any? Go and look at anything that 'might' be suitable and you may find you fall for something when you see it in the flesh.

Kristine Douglas has a grey for sale that I like the look of from an ad I've seen somewhere other than Horsequest.
 
I'm going to summer champs next week so will see if anything for sale there in the brochure, other than that i am going to the Sport Horse Sales at malvern - maybe my special horse is waiting there for me which is why i cant find anything just for now!!
I believe I have seen that one offers around 9K i have shown my producer and although says its ok it doesnt get her all excited.
Thats the difficulty if i love something she has to like it at the very least as she has a better eye and will be showing it.
 
Going back to the age thing, my horse only started serious showing as a 10 year old, qualified HOYS first time as an 11 year old and has qualified again this year so defo not too old. However I do sometimes think that judges prefer younger horses in showing classes and obviously compare that something at 12 should be going much better than a 4 year old. It does sometimes make me a little cross as a 4 year old bred for showing, shown in hand from a foal etc can have far more mileage on it than a new to showing 10 year old!
 
I have seen him Welshmonsters, and he looks a bit too common in those pics bordering on cankles too. I want something a little more quality.

Taffster - just checking you've looked in the county level showing horse category? There are some cobs in there that I didn't see on the show cobs page, and some very nice animals also.
