I have been offered a lovely dales yearling on permanent loan, the lady who owns him has a seemingly genuine reason for loaning him but I can't help but thinking what if she just wants someone else to do all the hard work and cash outlay to get him shown backed ridden away etc
So am i just being cynical or not

I don't think you are. Bringing on a youngster is a lot of time and work and risk. I hate to say it but I wouldn't be surprised that as soon as he is going nicely he is sold from underneath you or she wants him back to ride herself.

ETS- How well do you know the owner? Does she have genuine reason for looking for a permanent loan rather than selling on? Would you not prefer to buy him yourself? Surely a yearling isn't that expensive and on a permanent loan you will be paying all his costs anyway?

Isn't it a chance you take with any loan though? Especially a youngster. How about loan with a view to buy later?

I agree but I would rather take the chance with a horse I can go out and have fun on right now than an animal I have to put a considerable amount of time and effort into to get to stage where it is safe in traffic and is able to hack out at a decent clip. It will be a while before this little guy is even backed. And the fact that the owner doesn't want to sign any kind of contract is suspicious.

Don't think you are being cynical at all just realistic. If the horse could not be ridden for 2 years due to injury that just needed resting no-one would take it 'on loan' would they? IMO the same applies to a yearling. Who on earth would loan a yearling?? Think owner is being totally unrealistic and obviously not that bothered about it otherwise she would want to make sure it didn't end up ruined for when she either wanted it back or wanted to sell it. Not for one minute saying that you would ruin it but another loanee easily could.

No not at all that was the first thing in my mind and you will be right. You dont know her so I would buy or she pays you for bringing on her horse or you looking after it etc I would not loan this at all...if you decide to???
