So I’m currently 22 weeks pregnant.

I posted a while back about a companion for my mare when my elderly shetty passes over rainbow bridge but also wanting something that I can have for my soon to be daughter.

Well I may have just bought a 5 year old unbroken section a. Now I’ve broken in before but my friend will be doing this one… but everyone seems to be more concerned about me not being able to cope when my daughter is here…

For context… I’m due November, keep horses at home, have a 15h and a sherry already. They come in from
Mid November over night through to April. I have someone who I pay to poo pick, and have a part loaner for my mare.

Am I being daft? Will it be super hard?

It’s always a good idea to forward plan. As long as you’ve plenty of people to help you’ll be fine especially if they’re at home and can bring themselves in if need be.

I can't see a problem, with or without the sherry. 🤣

Seriously though, as long as you don't beat yourself up to ride, and who wants to in winter, you'll be fine with having a small herd at home.

Got to love a typo (I was on my phone!)

So our routine is pretty simple really; I have my mare 4 days a week where I'll ride when I can (I tend to not ride as much in winter anyway!) My part loaner has her 3 days a week and will ride on those days. In the summer, she poo picks on her days and in the winter, she will either bring in or turn out for me on those days with some mucking out depending on if morning or evening.

Which will leave me with the ponies- Two. It takes me minutes to muck these out so I'm not fussed about this. I also have a groom once a week who comes up and poo picks for me in the summer or in the winter, she will help out on a Friday.

Overall, I think it's doable with a newborn. I know people who have 4 ponies and are on their own whereas I have my husband and my parents live on site (they're as useless as a chocolate teapot though!)

So effectively all I've got to do is muck out 3 ponies in the winter, either turn out or bring in, haynets with the odd bit of riding in between. In the spring, baby will be around 4-5 months so alot easier.

Oh gosh, you will be fine what with the sharer/groom and having them at home.

It was a while ago (they are teens now) but I had two event horses plus a pony on my own rented yard (about 10 min drive away) with no help at all! It was hard, but I managed and the babies survived, as did the horses! Babies somewhat neglected (had to sleep in wheelbarrows etc) but they can’t remember !!!

I dreamt of having the horses at home so I didn’t have to pile the muppets into the car twice a day…in the cold and wet…

You won't know until you are there, with baby!
But pony will be sellable if it all goes wrong, so go for it :)
