I've just put in a new gorgeous menage (20x40) and have a small livery yard. I've got two stables free and have a lady who seems lovely and wants to move in imminently. The thing is, she told me she doesn't ride her horses very much because of health issues. It's really put me off accepting her because in my minds eye I was sort of hoping for someone new who would be up for eventing or dressage or jumping or just generally use the facilities and bring the place on. Do you think I should go with an essentially lovely lady or hold out for someone more 'serious' to vicariously live out my dreams through... When I was buying the menage I was sorta hoping it would be used almost all the time.

Ask yourself seriously whether anyone who was intending to compete seriously would welcome what one could see being your constant involvement.

However, if you want to live the life but not do it yourself why don't you see if there's someone up and coming locally who would love a setup like yours and offer them a reduced rate as sponsorship on the understanding that you are included in outings, or even buy a suitable nag for them and be an owner. If it's all upfront beforehand I think it would work out better.

In my experience one of the main reasons people change livery yards is because of yard politics and bitchiness. If you have someone who you get on with and who will fill your vacant stables take her money and enjoy the company. Your new menage will last longer if it's not being used for every hour of daylight. If the woman cant ride much due to ill health, is there someone you know who might ride a bit for her that she might allow to compete on her horses, thereby filling your 'vicarious' needs? I say go with someone you know you like and who is ready to move in.

No this is all true! The grass always looks greener n all that. I'm probably trying to bite off more than I can chew! I feel better for getting this out of my system.
