So a couple of weeks ago I was just riding into my field when one of the other ponies took off with mine in hot pursuit! he did a big buck and I went flying landing on some very hard ground. I was in a lot of pain but went home instead of going to A & E because I didn't think it was anything too bad. Well since then I have had terrible pain in my ribs and have been on pain killers, I did go to the walk in clinic where she said most likely they are cracked but nothing they can do. So the question is should I still be riding? I wear my BP which seems to support the ribs and dose up on pain killers so it's not too bad, I just worry that if I don't ride for a while I won't want to get back on! and he's going to be so crazy it will be even worse! I am not the most confident of riders and this has set me back. Thanks for your opinions !

I got bucked off my boy a few months ago and landed on my ribs. Think I cracked one. I did get back on after a couple of weeks as I didn't want to leave it too long without riding. It took about 6 weeks until they stopped hurting but riding was okay, it was the dismounting that was a bit awkward. Plenty of hot baths helped. Hope you feel better soon x

Problem with ribs is they heal very quickly but you can also stuff up the healing process very easily too. I broke mine nearly 3 weeks ago. So far I have set them back by lambing a ewe (had no choice) and having the hiccups for an hour (again not a lot I could do!).

There is no way I will ride until they are healed as if they are hanging by a thread and you fall off again, it's going to be even longer and more painful! I've heard of two other people who damaged theirs then did something else which properly broke them. If you think it's bad now...!

I rode 3 days after a nasty concussion because I knew I had to get back on quickly. I fell off a friend's horse so getting back on my 22yr old silly but very safe boy for 5 minutes wasn't quite the same and I did only walk. Having said that, it probably wasn't wise considering I was still getting dizzy spells :o .

We all do it, though, Michael Jung broke his ankle on his first ride at Burghley last year and still rode his 2nd and won as well. He is the world's best rider though!

I'd say as long as they pain is no worse when you're riding and as long as you're not doing anything too risky - maybe just walk and a bit of trot - then carry on. If you're anything like me, you will anyway even if we tell you not to :D

Oh sorry to hear about your injuries - vmac66 yes dismounting is the worst bit! Glad you've healed up now, FfionWinnie its hard not to do anything isn't it? my job is very physical, I'm self employed so can't go off sick just have to grin and bear it! Yes this is what I'm worried about doing more damage as again I can't afford to not be earning ! x

For the hiccup, try taking some water in your mouth, then leaning forward so your head is upside down (sorry probably hard with broken ribs) and then swallowing the water while upside down. It does work :)

For OP, could you have a short break for the ribs to heal and lunge before you get back on? Perhaps setting up a round pen type paddock to ride in could help too?
