Donovan has come in for the last couple of days with really gunky eyes. it doesnt seem to bother him, he is not trying to rub his eyes on anything, i am washing them with salt water, but should I be doing anything else? Or should it just be vet?
 
my old man had a similar thing last week i wiped them with an old tea bag and salt water which seemed to clear them up. pretty sure his was cos of the wind we had as his eyes do get like that when its windy :)
 
Just keep a close eye on it (sorry for the pun). One of my livery Shetlands has had a gunky eye for some time. It has now been diagnosed as a blocked tear duct - the problem has been solved for the moment but I'm sure will recur.
 
I would put him in a fly mask to stop them making it worse or carrying disease to his eyes. The fly mask will also reduce the likely hood of the wind causing a problem to the eyes. If the discharge turns gunky get the proper treatment from a Vet.
 
Sounds like conunctivitis will a little help from the pesky flies, can you put a hood on. Also how is his nose because they are connected and if runny could make the pus come out the tear ducts
 
My one gets watery/sleepy stuff in his eyes. Its not conjuctivitius though, he just has sensitive eyes, they are worse in full sunshine or when its windy. I keep his fly mask on especially at dawn and dusk when the flies are worse. But make sure its not conjunctivitius first. Also if it is you can use golden eye from over the counter at a chemist. (its what we use when we get it).
 
My daughters pony always has gunky eyes. Vet said blocked tearduct and advised flushing (which didnt work!) but also said it could be due to eye worms. These worms are becoming more common and are spread by flies. Treatment is usually a course of Panacur 5 day.
 
Mine had this and little pink bits at the top corner of his eyes. I bathed around the edges with salt water, bathed with tea bags and then around the outside smothered it in aqueous cream. He looked very silly with his white circles though! But it cleared up in a couple of days. Aqueous cream is pretty good at keeping flies away weirdly. But smother it on thick! It also keeps seeds and stuff from getting in their eyes. :-)

That can't be good.

Wash with cold black tea.
But get a vet to look if it doesn't improve quickly.
You dont want to mess with eyes.
They are very delicate and will be damaged quickly.
 
Well. got him in tonight, his eyes were still quite gunky, with crusty bits on his eyelashes, so I decided the only thing to do was speak to the vet. Got lots of advice, she said if it was just one eye she would be more concerned because it could be a foreign body, but as its both and theres lots of discharge it sounds very much like conjunctivitis. So I picked up some antibiotic drops from the vets, he is to have them twice a day for 5 days, if there is no improvement by monday I am to call her again.
