Am I being petty? WWYD?

I think I would be saying no totally now, as you have offered for the trainee to use your horse when its convenient for you. To then try and make you feel guilty is unfair. Either they agree to you being present at a convenient time for you, as the horse owner or not at all in my opinion.
 
I really feel for you OP, I too have a kindly honest horse, she is older and whilst she can do most things it's important to understand her limitations. I am happy to lend her to friends for hacks but last year I felt as if I were under some pressure to lend her out to a friend of another livery to take to fun rides and all sorts. Apparently this friend was not up to riding any of the other horses belonging to this livery or other liveries, I did let her ride my horse a few times and whilst she was a superior rider to me (that's not hard) I just didnt like her attitude, like she was doing ME or my horse a favour, pah!

So, no, I don't think you're being petty and anyone who says you are should happily offer up their own horse for the job

Agree - if this some kind of NVQ or something then if after an amount of training she cannot jump one of the 30 horses which presumably she has trained on then she should not pass/complete the course at all. Hard luck why have assessments if you 'fake' people's ability to pass them???

Me too, I'd be taking my tack home to 'clean it' before my holiday and I'd be making it 100% clear to YO/ everyone else on the yard that absolutely nobody is to ride my horse in my absence
Lots of the 'excuses' for (IMHO) stealing rides on people horses are because the culprit didn't realise the owner would mind!!

I wouldn't let her ride him whether I was there or not - if there are 30 school horse to choose from that she's not good enough to ride (but I am a control freek!)
 
I think the student is being VERY short sighted here. She wants to pass her course, fine. But if she's not competent of riding your 'average' horse around a reasonable course, she's only going to endanger herself should she take up a position where this is expected of her. Standards required to be passed are set that way for a reason and I cannot understand the YO's attitude. Not the right way to go about it at all and there is no way I would allow my mare (who is also very kind and looks after novice riders) be ridden in this situation.

He has a sharer who would be coming to ride next week so not really possible :( Unless I took his saddle home as sharer has her own treeless and leave a bridle. I'd have to take my other horse's tack home too as well because that fits him!

Sorry just to clarify the other horses aren't school horses, it's a private yard. :)

The trainee doesn't want to leave, she's being pushed by yo to finish. But I agree that she's not ready to be signed off!

It sounds like the trainee needs to speak to the course organiser as she's really not being treated properly it seems.

Ahh i see, sorry NellRosk i assumed because she was pressuring you as well she wanted to do it, i understand now. In which case I completely agree with the above, it doesn't sound like its doing her much good.

I wouldn't allow it no! Absolutely not, but then I am very precious about my horses. The problem is horse break easily, what if god forbid something happened to your horse, you would never forgive yourself, I know I wouldn't. The only people who ride our horses are myself and my 2 daughters, I have let the odd person hop on for a little poodle round but NEVER allow anyone else to jump them, out of the question I'm afraid! I just don't want that pressure or responsibility .
 
I honestly couldn't express my opinions on here without serious risk of a banning. But think of a four letter word followed by "off" in response to your YO's request and you're not far off the mark...

Horrible for you.

And who will pay if she injures your horse through being iincompetant? What about if she gets him into refusal mode and you have to pay for schooling to overcome an issue she has created? It will all be dumped at your door as its your horse. It is such a shame you can't trust YO to respect your wishes and not use your horse at your request. Say no, mean no, try to turn up unexpectidley a few times so they can't assume they know you wont be there. Sad but needed.
 
I would suggest that if they genuinely can't find time on your yard, the girl hires a suitable venue in the vicinity when you can be there. The condition for her being able to borrow your horse is that you are able to be there, otherwise it doesn't happen.
 
It would be a no from me too i`m afraid, serious alarm bells ringing for me from the off set with YO saying she can`t use any of her 30?!!! Really? ... and why would that be then ... :/

I`d be saying a definite 'No' ... taking my tack home with me, and asking some one I trusted to keep an eye out that they didn`t do it behind my back whilst I was away ... That`s really unfair on you tbh Nellrosk :(
 
Thanks for all your replies everyone, they gave me the push I needed to go down to the yard tonight and talk to YO. Just said I really wanted to be present if she rode him as I was slightly concerned that she wasn't up to riding any of the yard horses. Anyway it's going to be organised that she can go to a local equestrian center in the next few weeks and jump one of the schoolmasters there. Phew, situation avoided and I can enjoy my holiday in peace now. :)

This is why I keep mine at home. My horse is my pleasure and I will not have it spoiled by people telling me what I should do with my boy.

Also when they took the girl on were they aware she would be needing to jump this course? Shouldn't they have said sorry we don't have anything suitable a riding school or similar wouldpprobably be best.

Give her your number to call in case she gets pressured by YO.

The YO simply needs to make other arrangements and behave in a professional manner.

Perhaps the reason you have such a nice sensible horse it because s/he doesn't get messed about with eh?
