Just wanted some thoughts please as not sure i am doing the right thing
My ex-racer is ten years old and is currently being used as a companion, i did try to sell/loan him but just had lots of timewasters.
Now he is a great companion as he is a total dude to handle and will stay in the field on his own, only down side is he does need tlc with his feed to keep weight on.
So is it wrong to keep a ten year old TB as a companion when he has nothing wrong with him or am i being selfish and should sell him where he can do a job?
Any thoughts? :)

I would say no need to sell him if you are meeting his needs and he is a happy boy.

But is this something you can maintain long term?

If not it may be better to get him in work and find him a home...I only say this as if in a few year time you can no longer keep him, it will be much harder to find a good home for a 14 year old ex racer who has been out of work for 4 years!

If he's happy, no probs, but it sounds like you feel you are letting him down in someway and he's most probable as happy as a bug in a rug, in his ideal world.:):):):)

Thanks for the nice replies :) was ready to don my tin hat as i really thought people would find it wrong.

Hi

He is young but no keep him and he is no problem(my old boy is happy as larry on his own he has all the grass to himself(good doer). Earlier thread on here about getting a companion, and I can assure you after much expense & time searching am glad to have my ready made, one I know all the good and bad history.

I am amazed at the number of people that seem to think horses are disposable when they no longer have a use, cant afford to keep it as they need a new one(er why did you get one in the first place if you cant afford its long term keep)?!Sorry to rant I dont mean this thread, just a theme I keep picking up on.
I only got a horse when I knew long term that I had to look at all eventualities to do right by it. I think its great to retire a horse if its given you a good service and is healthy.

Dont feel guilty you are doing whats right. I am sure he is' nt complaining?

I was given two ex racers, both as five year olds, intention was to retrain and for them to be shown in ROR classes and a little dressage and PC but my other horses have taken over priority wise riding and these two have found their calling as babysitters to my youngsters and tbh they couldn't be happier. They have everything they could ever want and are pampered and very much loved parts of the family who I have made provisions for so they never have to leave the family. They do come on walks with us when we take the youngsters out but they are never ridden. They are only seven and I really don't think they long to be ridden, probably prefer it that they don't have to work anymore and just get to have fun.

Don't feel bad and feel you have to sell, yours is probably in his element just mooching about in the field.
