Am I being too picky for my budget?

Green suits me perfectly. I'm in Surrey. Yep dealer and Irish both fine.

Not really, I'd prefer to go young and green than older an inexperienced.

Thanks, I'll have a look.

I've tried a couple on facebook, but haven't heard anything back, may start phoning some.

After 3 in a row with KS I can't bring myself to take a punt.

Cheers, I'll have a look.

I got mine from a dealer who brought her over from Ireland, i would say really be cautious i know you will have a lot more experience than I do but we're now trying to get our "complete novice mare" to a stage where i can ride her without being bucked off. (After her back is checked) so i always get nervous for people when they say that.

If you had had yours vetted and/or done an MOT when you got her then you wouldnt be having the issues you are though. OP is vetting and xraying backs so she is taking every precaution.

If you came to France, you would certainly find a bay Shagya of the height you want, they do everything. After my stallion completed 3 x90km endurance for his stud book performance, he started jumping. His full sister qualified for NSJ Championships for 6 years old last year. Both grey and sister more than your budget.

Also post on the Cleveland Bay Open Forum and see if anyone has a part-bred CB for sale. They are not all giants. The first two pure breds I purchased were 15.2hh and 15.3hh. My current herd stand around 16hh-16.2hh except for my CB stallion.

I have always purchased directly from breeders.

On this advert, you need to read what is not written rather than what is. It will be pennies for a very good reason.

i do see what you mean, but not all cheap horses are hiding something. ive bought 3 over the years, all cheap, 2 not vetted (1 that we did, failed, but we bought him anyway) have all been fab horses.

To be honest i bet half the horses on my current yard wouldnt have been particularly expensive and all great!

Thank you to everyone for helping I'm sorry I've gone quiet I've had a very un-weekendy weekend! I will take the time to reply to your posts tomorrow. Thanks again.

Another poster has suggested ntequine, she is a dealer but has a good reputation and is in Surrey.

I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole to be honest. The "well schooled" mare I went to see nearly went over backwards with their rider on and continued to be advertised as a safe ride many months later when they dropped her price due to timewasters.

On HorseQuest ad ref 128793 looks a nice sort, I also like 170455 if you don't mind a buck.

I've seen them, the first is an ex racer which I'm a bit cautious of now after two showing KS in x-rays, as well as the fact that those looking into KS saying in all likelihood 70% of race horses have KS. And I don't mind a buck but it wouldn't be suitable for my mum. Ta for finding them for me though.

Yikes, I'm not surprised you are losing the will.

Have you done a wanted ad on facebook?

I would leave it a few weeks, take a break before looking again.

Have you looked at any horses over your budget that have been on a while that they might take an offer on?

Yep I've done a wanted ad across a few groups. I think I break may be necessary, I may stop actively looking but keep my eyes open. Not really, I'm aware of a couple over budget that have been on a while so I could try. Ta.

He doesn't look like the sort we're after.

Lancashire is too far for us.

This lady always has some nice and reasonably priced horses for sale. Viewed some there when I was looking but just didn't have quite what I wanted at that time, nice horses though.

Yep I'm keeping an eye on her page, at the moment she has nothing suitable.

We'd love a Cleveland bay I didn't think of them as "small" enough so thanks for the tip, I shall look into them.

Or this? I swear I read the post properly this time. Not a mare and not a grey :)

I've enquired (though ma's not a fan, I'm trying to widen her horizons) but not heard anything back yet.

Well Ive got the horse for you in your budget BUT she's GREY (cleanest horse ever though), a MARE and older than 8 ;)

And you're in Scotland so couldn't be much further away, I think that gives you a full house lol.

On this advert, you need to read what is not written rather than what is. It will be pennies for a very good reason.

I do that with all adverts, also I've had a couple of times when during the viewing the seller has said something different from the advert or our initial conversation, which never fills me with much confidence.

I've got nothing against cheap horses one of my best horses was £1, but whether they're £500 or £5000 I'm getting vettings and back x-rays done as I've had shocking luck with horses over the last 6 years (even though they were all vetted).

Thank you again for the help everyone, it's very very much appreciated even though I started all this to rant and moan lol.

Keep looking, you will find what you want eventually. Perhaps look for a nicely brought up rising 4 year old and make it yourself ?
