My girl is on box rest at the moment (so I've had alot of time to think:) ) I have the opportunity next year to buy another event horse.

I intend to go Novice next year so I would like a horse that is established at this level to run alongside my current horse.

However, looking at alot of adds most of the horses are well out of my price range, they all seem to be £10k upwards

I don't have a budget, but I don't want to 'overpay' for a Novice horse. My vague criteria at the moment is 16hh+, Up to 10yrs old, mare or gelding, good form at Novice or PN.

Am I looking in the wrong places??

i think an established Novice horse who is easy enough to be a schoolmaster at that level and under 10yrs old will be a bargain at £10k!!

could you perhaps look at increasing the age to 12?

or perhaps something with a 'quirk' that doesn't affect the eventing such as a weaver?

I think you will get a horse established at PN for that budget but at the age you are looking for not established at Novice level. I think you would need to be more flexible on age for a Novice horse at that price.

I think its just because I haven't bought over the past 4 years, so have no idea what the average price would be?

Most quirks welcome, current horse has been known to do her fair share of napping ad rearing and have got her through that (thank goodness) !!

well i bought Pilfer as a 10yro about 6 years ago- he had already won 2 x PN and had one run at Novice.

easy to ride to a fence and incredibly bold- perfect for a numpty wanting to be introduced to eventing!

he was advertised for £6k as he weaves, but i knocked them to £4.5k as he failed the vet on 5m concrete circle.

without the weaving, without the funny front leg and 6 years on, i would be expecting to pay £8-10k for him.

for a horse at Novice i would expect to pay £10-14k depending on points etc

Thanks milltiger, that does help a great deal.

I really won't be looking until maybe september but was having a look at the prices on horseselect and unfortunately my favourite is named 'A future little star' however there is no price tag, so have a feeling he may be more than 10k!!:)

Wait till August/September as that is the time that uni/school kicks in and lots of these types come on the market they will either be reliable PN horses ready to make the final step or they will be novice horses.
