We are having new roof fitted on some of the stables, one of which is Dollys. Because of the work, the horses whose roof's are being done, have to be out all day, so the turnout arrangements are up in the air for a bit.

Anyway, on Friday, she was put out with another mare that attacked her. Luckily, no real harm was done, she has a bite out of her bum, but that is all. Today, I find out she is out with another horse she has never been out with before. They are getting on ok, but no-one asked me if it was ok and I think that is wrong. Also, this horse has no reason to be out, as his roof isn't being done.

I am now a bit p'd off.
 
I'd be a bit knarked as well. Don't get stroppy though, just say that you are concerned and could the disruption/field swapping be kept to a minimum.
 
Have a quiet word with YM or YO and say you are concerned about this horse that she does not know, especialy if its a gelding.
Don't understand yards that do this, we would have either kept her seperate but within sight of others or put her with a mare she gets on with.
 
Thing is, there is a horse in the field next to her, and she is fine out on her own anyway.

I'm amazed - is it common then for livery yards to chop and change the occupants of fields??????

I would be mad. A horse was turned out in my field earlier this year and P went lame as a result of the bullying behaviour that ensued. I do not think this behaviour is on at all.
 
Yes I would be annoyed. I like to be present when a horse is turned out with mine and then hang round for a long time to make sure they get on.

Not good to keep swapping fields and horses - this is how fights can occur.
 
I work at a livery yard. We consult our owners on every thing we do with the horses.
If an owner doesn't want their horse in a heard then they are padocked off in electric fence, however this will cost them more as we have to poo pick the padock and keep up fresh water.
But in curcumstances such as this we would do this with no extra charge as we are causing the reason your horse has a change in routine.
 
I don't understand why anyone thinks it's OK to just throw horses in together without proper introductions. It's asking for trouble and injuries, so yes, I'd be beside myself and very annoyed. At my yard we always introduce a new horse in an ajoining paddock until we see good body language over the fence, and then they only go in with others when all owners are present.
Don't your horses go out normally during the daytime? I'm just not sure why there needs to be a change in turnout routine, unless the stables aren't ready by the evening, or your horses are normally in during the day.
