Hi,
My horse is kept at a livery yard, and is on full livery Mon - Fri, I have been a livery there for 12 years and the horse I have now has been there for approaching 9 years (

I get on well with the YO and she has always been quite strict as to how things are done at the yard, which she needs to be as there are about 40 horses there.
We probably have about 10 kids at the yard and during the dark winter months YO asks me not to ride between the hours of 4pm and 6pm (sometimes I can get out of work during the day) so that it gives the kids a chance to exercise their ponies and get done before the adults get down after work. I see this as being pretty reasonable so I don't mind.
The rules on booking our school for lessons are quite clear, no lessons between 3pm and 8pm on a weekday so that everyone has access to ride. Now I know that this means if kids want a lesson then they are going to be home late but they are the rules and if it doesn't work for them then they should look for another yard.
So I check the calendar today and the YO has given one of the kids permission to book a lesson every Tuesday night at 7pm from now until Christmas. Shortly our fields will be closed and the horses will be in 24/7 so I have to have access to the school to work my horse otherwise he doesn't take kindly to being in. And most of the time I can't get there on a work day until after 6.30 so therefore I use the school from 7pm til 8pm.
Now, I fit in around the kids so I don't see why they should take my riding time away from me.
Do you think I'm being unreasonable?

I am going to tonight, as she wasn't there earlier on. She isn't the easiest of people to talk to though so I'm not really looking forwards to it!!
And no doubt she'll say that as it's only one night a week can I not work around it... but I have other things to do as well as ride and it doesn't always work for me to be there on certain nights!

perhaps ask if u can have it so on one other nite a week , the kids llose their slot and u can ride then instead to make it fairer?and then use th day of the kids lesson as ur horses day off perhaps?

Surely it would be easier for the kids to have a lesson on a weekend?? Can people not work in the other half of the arena whilst lessons are on? At the ard I'm at people just work around the lessons unless its jumping which is only done on a Friday so people either use the other school or go on a hack!

Are you able to plan a hack for that day every week?

I don't think you're being unreasonable, but you will probably find that to keep the atmosphere happy you will have to work around this kid who seems to have randomly got special treatment.

Only problem being.. if YO bends the rules for one kid then I know the others will bound to want to follow suit..... so then where does that leave us??!! Surely rules are rules.
There are allocated times where we can book the school for sole use, any other time the school is free for anyone to use. If they want to have a lesson then that is fine, as long as they know that I will be riding too! So no jumping etc.
Bramble87, I do try and work round people as much as I can, so have given him his day off in the past when someone had to have a lesson as they were having problems. It's just that I feel I try and think of others as much as i can, yet no one else does!!
I have just spoken to YO and said that coming into the winter this was going to cause me problems due to the level of work Osc will need and she has said that she will try and sort something out.
I was just interested to hear other opinions incase I was causing trouble, as I don't like to do that!!

Well it seems like your YO runs her yard in a way that tries to give everyone an equal look in, its hard in the dark winter months to keep your horse fit and work too. At least she has heard you out. I would hope she doesnt bend the rules for others though.
