My mares live out on grass livery at a medium sized livery yard. I turned up last week for the daily check and feed (both are TB's and fed daily) to find another livery had placed a lick in the field. No notice to anyone, I went over and to have a look as my two were standing right by it biting big chunks out of it. I got a bit closer and saw it was one that had been a hand made one it seems into a tub as the tub had no contents or ingrediants on it. I took it out of the field and texted another livery, who I got the reply to 'No - I know nothing about it'.

Just after that another livery arrived and was turning her mare out. She then asked why the lick was removed as she wanted it back in the field. I asked where it came from to be told it was 'Home made and contained a mixture of herbs and minerals that was necessary for ALL the horses'. I asked what herbs and other things had been added as one of my mares is a walking sick note with a list as long as your arm with allergies. She named some of the ingrediants and it did in fact contain some things which SN is allergic to. Because of this I don't want the lick back in the field, SN mare is top dog so will hog the lick and the others won't get a look in.

Livery has now moaned and groaned about the fact it SHOULD be in the field it's NECESSARY and now as my mare is allergic I should pay for all the ingrediants and her time in making it up.

I refuse as a) I never wanted a lick in there in the first place, but if she wants to put a branded salt one then no worries.

b) I didn't ask for one so why should I fork out £10 to her for her homemade special one ?

Other liveries don't care one bit, there is plenty of feed out in the field. YO won't get invovled and doesn't care either.

Am I being over the top and unreasonable about this ?

Nope, no way in hell I'd let mine in with a "lick" containing unspecified herbs

I bet she thinks it's "safe" because it's "natural" too

Suggest she keeps in in a bucket with a lid on, and then when she removes her horse, it can be offered to said horse while it is away from the herd.

Otherwise any 'extras' in the field really should be done by full agreement of the field users, surely?

No, not being unreasonable IMHO :)

I must say I have never heard of a livery putting any sort of foodstuff in a field with other livery horses. I think she is completely unreasonable not you. How ignorant and selfish, she has no idea of any other horses medical conditions.

tell her her horses may get injured as yours fights them for it. Move the lick, tell her the horses ate it and don't they all look fab... repeat till she runs out of money/inclination to make more. Send her your vet bills.....

to name a few things I would do :)

Don't be daft, of course you're not being unreasonable. She is. Totally out of order to be feeding your horse stuff that mightmake her ill, and as for trying to charge you for it... I'm speechless! Tell her she's lucky your horse didn't colic and you're not asking her for ££££££ towards vet's bill!

Why can't she keep it in her box? It sounds from your post that she keeps her horse in at night, so that would solve all the problems.

Excellent :D

As Terry Pratchett says, chuck some weeds in a jar and you've got 'herbs'...

I don't think you're being unreasonable. She may have had the best intentions, but she should have asked first. She could have made your horse very unwell, if I was her I'd be mortified!

By the livery's definition then, anyone can feed the herd with anything as long as its natural. Stick a bucket of oats/apples/carrots in and see if she likes it.

I asked that as well as both her mare and gelding are kept in each night, but she insists on them having access to her home made licks 24/7.

You're not being unreasonable, she is. However it sounds as though it could escalate into a huge row and atmosphere at the yard, so perhaps tell her that you think that it was a nice thought to share her home made creation with all the horses, but will either lead to fights or allergic reactions - both of which could land her with huge vets bills for other people's horses or a law suit if she doesn't pay them.

The YO should get involved - he could surely be in trouble too if a horse was injured because he knew people were feeding it things that it was allergic to and against the owners wishes.

LOL 24/7 access to some nice racehorse mix might be more fun :D :D

OP I would flip if someone did that with my horses, the woman sounds nuts, threaten her with your vets bills.

I would thank her for the thought. But explain that not only could the Horses get ill from it. But it will also cause fights. She wants access 24/7, but say due to your Horse being the boss, her Horse doesn't have access anyway.

Not at all unreasonable.
I used to have a mare that couldn't eat even the tiniest bit of sugar or cereals. It drove me mad that passing idiots would insist on feeding her 'treats' that made her ill and virtually unhandleable.
I'd tell your particular idiot that you'll send her the vet bill if your horse gets any more of these 'herbs'.
I do think though that YO SHOULD get involved.

To quote my comedic heroine . . . "short answer = no, long answer = nooooooooooooooooooo"

You are NOT being unreasonable . . . what does she think she's on giving your (or anybody else's) horse any kind of food/supplement, etc. without the owners' consent.

I would be as tactful as possible and say simply that if her horses need access to this herbal . . . erm . . . rubbish/whatever 24/7 then she needs to consider grazing them on their own.

Good luck.

She sounds like a bit of an eejit to put anything into the field she shares that can influence horses in there that dont belong to her, especially without even asking others of they minded .
You sound nice and rational, id have broke ot up and binned it. Id have then told her where id put it, if she tried to put in another one :D
Can you tell im a bit hormonal atm :o

Anyone feeding mine is likely to get they're heads bitten off. I too have one with allergies! Talk kto yard manager, if she wants the horse to have 24/7 access to it, they need to be kept away from everyone elses!
Also if its only out during the day, it still has 16 hours to lick the damn thing anyway!
I don't like licks in the field with more than a couple of horses, its asking for trouble, is she going to pay the vets bill if someones horse, gets kicked?

I completly understand your frustration! It is not on at all. She needs to be reasonable. If her belief is that her horses need this magic lick, then like another person said, let them have it at night. They will probably ignore it during the day anyway! And with yours possibly having a bad reaction to the magic lick, that should be more than enough reason for her to listen and remove it. If she cared about horses, she wwould care about yours too and its own health needs.
I had a similar issue, my mare is lami prone and the farrier gave me stern warning that I need to get her off grass/as much feed etc. So, she was put in a small paddock with limited grazing...I then found on about 3/4 occassions that another livery had been putting LOADS of hay (apples too) in with her!! Why do people feel the need to take it upon themselves to 'care' for your horse when they do not know your horse and dont ask before hand?! There is usually a reason why a horse is being kept as it is,...unless of course it is obvious neglect!

I would tell her to s*d off ! I am surprised none of the other liveries have said anything about her doing this ?

A livery on my yard kept giving my horse bits of haylage as his paddock is nearest the yard. I only feed him hay because he has a very delicate TB Stomach and has had 3 colic's in the 2 yrs I have had him so now monitor his diet all the time. Besides this he is MY HORSE and no one else should be interfering !!!

The first few times I mentioned it she said "Oh it's only a bit and he likes it" then the third time I informed her that should he need any vet treatment for colic or associated ailments I would be holding her responsible and sending her my vet bill, I also mentioned it to YO. And it has now stopped

No you are not - if your horse is allergic then SHE IS being very selfish, irresponcible and unreasnable esp. as her horses are in at night. She sounds totally nuts! Tell her to put the lick in her stable. Warn her infront of witnesses that your horse is allergic and should s/he have a reaction because the lick is in the field you will sue her for the vet bills. Witnesses are crucial though- to establish the allergic herb is contained in the lick and she is in full knowledge that your horse is allergic to said herb(s). She is then knowingly putting your horse at risk.

God, it angers me reading this because as a horse lover she should care about your horses health too! It's effectively like her puting poison in the field because some of the "herbs" will produce an allergic reaction in your horse. People - I hate people.
