am i being unreasonable!!!!!!!!!

As AM says. We have shut loose dogs in trailer and called dog warden whilst owner was stood with us previously. A neighbouring farmer has shot one. We had several lambs killed a few years back and now the council is on our side and agreed with shutting footpath when it was bad.

I'd be writing dates etc down and reporting the turkey anyway as gives you back up if she goes for compensation. I'd also be tempted to say that you are currently monitoring horse and vet fees will be sent to her if there is any damage.

Do get it on record somewhere even if you are not pursuing it though.

I agree that you should inform the police about the dogs killing the turkey.

Print out the dogs and livestock law, send it to her recorded delivery and next time - and the chances are there will be a next time, call the dog warden so the owner has to pay to get them back.

Two dogs equal a pack!

So sorry about your turkey, I lost a much loved goose the same way! If you have a search through my old posts you will see the tale of my experience with the police, having to make complaints, find and explain the appropriate laws to them etc before they would take me seriously. As it happened the CPS decided against prosecution of the owner but he was given a warning by the police which he took very seriously. I think I would speak to the dog warden first, they cannot get involved if the police have been involved but they can prosecute and will give the owner more of a scare I think! I seriously would not let this go, we got the vet bill for the goose and could have got the value but it is not about money (no amount would have made up for the horrific injuries the goose suffered in our case), it is about making the owner take responsibility and know the consequences if she doesn't.

I saw signs up the other day that I have never seen before 'Any dog caught in the field with livestock will be shot' - may be worth putting up something similar on your property - your horses are also classed as livestock under the dogs act.

Poor dog for having such a stupid owner! They could have been run down on a road! I'd send her a bill for the vet bill for the turkey!

One time I was losing sheep to dog attacks (and horrible deaths as they were left alive with severed wind pipes so needed shot once I found them).

I had a witness who had seen a black lurcher type pulling a ewe down. I went to see the damage and when I got there there was a yellow lab eating the carcass! I managed to catch the lab and phoned the number on the tag.

I said I had caught the dog eating the carcass of a sheep which had been mauled to death by a dog (I didn't suspect this dog of killing incidentally however it wasn't exactly innocent as it was in my field!).

The woman went mental on the phone saying it wasn't him who killed the sheep, it was her OTHER dog! She then tried to blame me for the fact the dogs had gone in the field because back in the summer there had been a dead sheep lying (actually it was a dead deer and not even in my field!).

I phoned the police and they had already worked out it was her dog and she was allowed to rehome it to someone with half a brain (I got no say and no compensation as the police said there was no point pursuing it, I reckon as they didn't want the bother, I should have done).

Anyway don't let the police say it was "just" a turkey. It was your livestock and didn't deserve to be killed like that.
