Am I being unreasonable?

I have let somebody hack out my semi-retired horse a few times. No probs at first, then in the space of a week they lost the flash attatchment off my Albion KB bridle and rode him out in the tipping rain and didn't clean the bridle afterwards, meaning it was like concrete when I went to use it a week later. They have now become really huffy and defensive, and imply that I am being unreasonable because I wouldn't accept the flash they bought as a replacement - it was a different colour and I think they should replace it with one that matches the bridle. Am I being unreasonable?
 
I would actually be a bit p***d off too. Did you actually speak about your tack before they started riding him, ie. are they supposed to clean it after use ?? Are they paying you to ride ? If so, perhaps they don't see cleaning your tack as part of the deal. TBH I would probably put it down to experience and buy a new flash yourself. Then, you need to establish the set up from now onwards.
 
Certainly not, I can sympathise with you as when I was in hospital a" friend" looked after my horse the favour went both ways as she had just lost hers, I had a brand new saddle well 6 months old told her not to tack up until she was ready to ride as he rubs and what did she do............ yes left it on unattended and £150 - £200 worth of damage has been done, no offer to help out either. I dont usually let others ride but thought she would be fine. Stick to your guns afterall it's general curtesy to clean tack after use and replace what has been lost.

You're not being unreasonable at all. It's common courtesy for a borrower to keep your tack in good condition, and common sense to clean it after rain. And I don't think buying a replacement flash of the same make and colour is too much to ask!
 
I don't think you are being unreasonable at all. They lost the item so should replace the item, not with some inferior part. I can understand them not cleaning the bridle after just one ride in normal circumstances but when it has got soaked it has to be, for the reasons you have said,
They will be the loser though......don't let them ride again.

No you aren't being unreasonable - losing flash straps is something which really bugs me too!

To be honest, if you are having this trouble now then I'd get shot of her as soon as possible as it will only lead to her becoming more aggressive as time goes on.
 
I don't think it is unreasonable at all, it really bugs me when people use stuff and then leave it lying around so it goes missing. I have lost track of the number of knives & hoze nozzles of mine that have gone missing. If people can't be bothered to look after stuff they shouldn't take it. When my horse trashed a pair of borrowed travel boots I replaced them immediately with the higher spec version.
 
Maybe I am being too passive - But I think that although it was inconsiderate of her not to clean your bridle after the rain a lot of people would not think to do this either. (Personally I would, but I am very consious of respecting other people and their things).
WRT the flash it depends on her attitude. If she had been genuinely sorry about losing it I might have understood. She bought another which was better than nothing at all? I've had people break my things and just walk away without apologising or replacing!!!! Which of course made me very angry.
All in all not ideal but maybe worth another chance if you can explain your side of the story.
 
I don't think you are being unreasonable at all. When I borrow something from someone, I take extremely good care of it. I expect the same in return.
