Am I being unreasonable?

Am i being an over protective unreasonable mum or have i got due reason to be pissed off?
Our gelding is in a field with two ponies and has been with for some time. This is due to the fact when he is in with a large group of horses including mares he gets very protective of "his ladies" and generally behaves like a bit of a pillock. He has never hurt another horse but they turned on him last time we tried it - mainly we suspect due to the fact he has no respect for the "field hierachy".
As he's 17.2 and could do himself or others a mischief the YO and us agreed he would have a smaller field on his own with two "mates". All since then has been fine.
Last week the YO was talking about field problems but didn't go into detail.
Sunday we see him and find him still in his fly rug which is odd as normally they take it off when they fetch him up. When i take his rug off i find two really nasty looking kick wounds on his chest and legs which look very fresh and are still weeping blood. YO nowhere to be seen - again odd as they always come out to see us. We clean our boy up and start treating his cuts - several of the girls tell us that he's been in the field with all the others with two mares in season.
YO (eventually appearing) feigns massive surprise about the cuts and swears they'd never seen them. The girl who brought him up states she told them first thing.
I'm angry that he was moved fields without consulting us and when its known what happens even when the mares aren't in season.
I'm even angrier that it appears they knew he was hurt and did nothing - not even call us.
I know horses get kicked but just feel this could have been prevented - am i being an over protective mum or do i have a right to be a little peeved to say the least?
 
no,be peeved, they obviously knoew and didnt bother to tell you - what if he'd been mortally wounded, would they have let you discover that for yourself too?
 
No, I would be really pissed of and looking for somewhere else if my horse was put in a new field, without my prior knowledge. Everyone knows I have a very tarty mare, so even warn me if new gelding are being put next to her, so I can double fence it, till they settle (as I had to do yesterday in the rain).
 
you have every right to be peeved. you were a responsible owner and made arrangements for your horse which your YO has disregarded. It sounds like YO knew you'd be peeved and is trying to cover it up
 
I would be absolutely spitting bricks!! You have every right to be upset - as would other owners should your horse have kicked their horses. The YO sounds very irresponsible to me.
 
I would be fuming!!!!

You have to ask yourself if you can trust these people with your horse again, if the answers no, id be moving asap!
The YO must of tried to cover up the evidence, to not tell you about his cuts. Just think if he got kicked in the wrong place and broke his leg.. then she would have been in big trouble.

If I were you id be out of there!!
 
We are looking for another yard as we speak. I'm glad its not just me being over protective - he's our first horse and i was made to feel like i was over reacting even though i was damn sure i wasn't!!
 
the worst thing to me is that they apparently tried to 'hide' the wounds by leaving the fly rug on - did they honestly think you were so stupid you wouldn't find them ??

move asap, but quietly thank the yard girl that said she told the YO as she tried to do the right thing.
 
that was the worst thing for me too...
horses get kicked/injured, we expect it pretty much, but not underhanded shennanigans like that from your YO
 
Apparently one of the other fields was flooded and one of his field mates was ill. When i asked they are still swearing that they didn't know he'd hurt himself and "forgot" about the reason he doesn't go in large groups when they moved him.
We went up last night and they were more solicitous than usual so they know we're not happy but we're now looking for somewhere else. Just good livery yards are like hens teeth around here and waiting lists are long so quietly looking with an intent to go as soon as we've found something.
 
Is he on Full/ Part Livery then? If so this totally unacceptable ( on DIY I would be unhappy about the field change). What I find acceptable is that if they really hadn't taken the rug and weren't hiding it, that they DIDN'T take the rug off and have a look at his body?!! Does that make sense?! He could have been tucked up or anything underneath that rug! His rug should also be taken off every day to be readjusted so that it doesn't make him sore.

Defo move. Their care standards obviously aren't very high. And look for somewhere that have small groups of horses as standard.
