He has a thin stable rug on at night (he's in a sheltered barn), but is still going out naked. It was about 6 degrees when he went out this morning and should peak at about 14 degrees, he will be in by 2

he is a thoroughbred, shire ID x and hasn't been clipped yet but isn't very woolly. Am I being mean?

He'll be fine while he is outside and able to move around to keep warm. The biggest problem comes when they are stabled overnight without enough warmth on them and they aren't able to keep moving to remain warm.

Even Chex is still rugless during the day, and am quite quick to rug up. I do feel bad whipping his rug off when there's still frost on the ground, but it always warms up during the day. Saying that I went up at 11 this morning and it was still only 5 degrees

The weather has been so strange hasn't it? It really is a confusing time for rugging them! My mare had her medium weight on when we had that cold spell about a month ago, (she hasn't been clipped) then last few weeks nothing on, as she was sweating loads! But just put her lightweight on night and day, as temp has dropped since yesterday and colder at night.

I hope not! Brooke still doesn't have a rug on her, but she gets so sweaty with one on! She isn't really doing enough work to clip yet so is staying naked.

I do feel a little guilty though!

My boy is in a lightweight during the day and i have just (last night upped his satble rug to a light quilted. He isnt clipped yet!

I know, so confusing on rugs! Our non-clipped oned are now back in their lightweights day and night, as there is a really cold wind at ours. My (fully clipped) boy, as of yesterday has his rug liner under his, as the weather forecast said it could get frosty overnight, and it was flipping chilly this morning!
I kind of go by how i feel! If i am out in a short sleeved top/warm in just a sweatshirt, he stays naked. If its chilly enough for a fleece for me, he has his lightweight, if I need a jacket/bodywarmer layer, he can have his liner as well which make it like a MW rug!

Phew, all the other horses at the yard are rugged, but I keep thinking he is a horse with fluffy coat, besides he loves rolling in the mud and I'd hate to deny him that pleasure. Also all his turnout rugs are brand new (it's his first winter with me) and I don't want to get them dirty!!!

None of mine have rugs on although I did put them on for 12 hours when it rained all day and night. Other than that they have been naked 24x7

rugs are just a nightmare arent they - i spent the rest of the household money on a medium turnout rug for the horse as her lightweight one got drenched and the poxy sun came out!!!!! grrr! that horse has more clothing options than me!!!!

My pony is a native and she has a light/medium weight stable rug on at night and a thinner sheet on in the daytime. If it is cold when she is turned out she has a lightweight turnout rug on. She has a chaser clip because she was getting very sweaty when ridden. All the horses at my yard are rugged now. Maybe we are all just overprotective Mummies (or we like buying rugs)?
