My boy is being roughed off for the winter, he will eventually be turned out 24/7 until mid December, but at the mo is in at night due to lack of available grazing, and I didnt want to change his routine too quickly....however he is out in the day naked now, and just has a 200g rug on in his stable overnight. He was clipped 4wks ago now and is a hairy bear, but has very faint lines left from the clip...however, the look of horror I have been getting from people on my yard makes me feel very cruel turnign him out without a rug!?? thoughts?!! He is on a high fibre diet, and is not loosing weight.

mine isnt clipped, but hasnt got too much of a coat 9probably about what yours has grown back, and he is out during the day naked, and in at night with a 200g on, and is plenty warm enough, I will clip him today, and then he can have a rug on in the field.

Hey I'm even crueller! George is out without a rug during the day and only has a lined sheet on at night. George isn't clipped yet, but then neither is your horse really.

Mine clipped, not roughed off and out most days naked and in with medium weight at night, she is warm as toast, as fat as a house, so I must be cruel too!!!

PMSL mine's out 24/7 unrugged with some hay (which he doesn't eat all of) - he was clipped at the end of Sept-ish. So I think yours will survive too! Just ignore other people, he's your horse, so whatever they think, I suspect you know him a little better than they do!

Kat- you are roughing him off, so I think that turning him out rugless will just make him hairier and prepare him for whats to come, if you turn him out with rugs on now he won't feel the benefit when it does get creally cold, I think you're doing the right thing, I don't like how people put rugs on horses for the love of it.

Oh how very cruel indeed! A horse with no rugs!

Mine are out 24/7 with no rugs on, none of mine are clipped, but the TB has not got much coat. They are horses and can deal with the cold better than heat. I dont know about the weather where you are but here it has been cold but also dry and still, I always give them a final check when I take the dog for her last widdle - they have been as warm as toast. I will not rug the TB until it gets windy and wet, the ponios will not get rugged at all.

Not at all! You WOULD be cruel, if you were TO out inthe a MW and HW in the stable, when you intend to turn him away for a few months! You are definitely doing the right thing atm!

Have to say he is a very happy round ponio at the moment IMO... if you saw a piccie of him he looks about 12.2hh in his hairy pony disguise!!

So cruel!

No, he's your horse, you know him better than anyone else and are doing what you consider best for him, nobody's business but yours. I wonder what they would do if they were roughing a horse off at this time of year?

If you ask for an opinion and get answers you may not agree with then that's fine, uninvited opinions should stay behind sealed lips unless it is a welfare case.

I'm in Grumpy Bat mode today. Stupid people not reading adverts, and asking what have I done with my filly workwise.......ummm, nothing, she's 6 months old, it does say that in the ad! Grrrrrrrrrr.
