Am I experienced enough for a horse like this?

If you've had experience of backing horses then surely you would have enough experience to take on an already backed one? He's a smart pony.

Ive helped but with a young horse this would be first time without much help so i guess thats what i mean and when adverts say no novices does it mean they dont want people out who are not going to buy straight away or does it mean they dont want beginners/?

Novice to me is someone perhaps straight out of riding school, someone who seeks confidence from the horse and will struggle perhaps during situations when the horse needs someone calm and confident to do it justice :)

I would say they are don't want novices because he is only young. Ring up and speak to them, I can't see any reason why you wouldn't cope based on what you've said and the advert! :)

Have checked the ad. He looks lovely, I can see why you would be interested, so agree you should ring and ask lots of questions. I just wonder why someone at/going to uni would take on a time-consuming youngster in the first place, or did they breed him?

It depends on how experienced you are. When you say you've helped backing, what do you mean... Could you lunge him/cope with him if he played up... Just be totally honest about your capabilities when buying a "not novice ride". If not it will more than likely end in tears.

I've got my mare up for share at the moment for an experienced rider only, and its amazing what people call experienced!

Ask lots of questions.

The only thing I'm a bit confused about is why he is being sold under "project horses". Says he hasn't been worked since March, that's less than a month.
From the info he just looks like a younger horse who needs to be taken forward.

Project tends to mean something that needs a lot of work and time spent usually doesn't it?

i feel maybe if your questioning your abilities you should look for something that is 7 years above, it seems as if you've found the first horse and fallen in love with it (i'm guilty of this too) i'd say keep looking, but thats just me as my friend last year bought something a little out of her experience zone and got a bit of a slap in the face, but i think thats why i have this view. though i say call up and find out about the horse because ads are never clear enough,
good luck in finding a horse :)

Hi he looks lovely, just think about what facilities you have access to and money for lessons/help. I Hope it works out connie arfe the best:)

I think that is a clever bit of advertising.

He is advertised at the right price for what he is. Putting him on a project sight gives him a good chance of experienced people enquiring about him and therefore him gaining a home to take him on with his education.

He looks a good stamp.

It is Sunday evening, so possibly yes. But all they can say is pleas call in the morning if they don't want to speak to you.

To me it would depend why he is on project horses and not just a normal site advertised as a young horse needing bringing on?
You sound like you
Might have enough experience to bring on a straight forward youngster but not one with additional problems

As others have said, ask lots of questions, think carefully, don't rush into anything, have a look at what else you could get for the same money, that sort of thing

I rang :D seems honest but she was saying she's hacked once not long after christmas and had to put on hold as she keeps him living out in field when had bad weather then something else propped up and she hasn't lunged him since march but will happily show him on lunge or long reining if have time if i came to view but she seemed quite genuine and reluctant to sell. feel bad tho mom is stil sayoing she doesnt want me having a youngster but i am realy fond of him

So she isn't going to show you him ridden then? I'd want to see it do a whole lot more than lunge & long rein for 2850!! Seriously. Or is it already yours ;)

Before you make up your mind just have a little scan of horsemart or something, £3k is a fair budget, you might find your perfect match!

Whoa a minute !........if the owner will not/cannot show you the horse under tack, you are looking at a totally different proposition.

You are very possibly looking at a horse with major issues. The price is now too high. If the owner is genuine the horse could be moved to a yard with facilities to allow him to be rebacked and then sold.

You are not fond of him, you have never met him, it is just a photograph.

it does say he is out of work, she said if he doesnt sell she will maybe get him to a sales yard to sell but she has no transport at the moment and will wait for that once she's finishes june time

Did she say why she won't ride him? I went to look at a horse a couple of months ago, the girl got on to ride her first and the horse promptly started rearing. I would definitely be wary of that, especially as the photo with the advert shows him being ridden (and in conjunction with the fact he is on project horses). If she's got no transport...hire a horse box. Or a trailer. Or someone with a horse box. I am in the process of buying a horse, and have no form of transport for getting it to the yard. So I turned to trusty old google, and hey presto! I had a variety of solutions!

You said you won't have much support for backing this pony...so bear in mind: if something goes wrong, you'll be on your own. Which ups the game to a whole new level.

Have a look around, there is a lot for sale under £3k at the moment.

Edit: sigh at students (I am a research funded PhD student, I did my time as a skint student!) who get horses. She's selling him because she doesn't have the time, money for facilities. Why did she get him in the first place then?! *facepalm*

Out of work or not I'd still want to see him ridden even if just a short walk, trot and canter. If she's not prepared to ride him or let him be ridden I'd be questioning why, and would fully expect the possibility of a bucker/cold backed/napper/bridle lame horse at home.

Be very careful. Even though he is out of work, if he is genuine and kind there is no reason why he cannot be tacked up, lunged to get any high spirits out and then got on. I say this in the assumption the horse is broken and ridden away.

If this is not the case he is only worth a fraction of the asking price and the purchaser will be taking a punt on temperament and soundness.

I have 2 horses on my yard that have not seen a saddle in over 2 years, but both could be tacked, long lined around the yard and mounted without any issues. Nether of them would be balanced or supple but they would potter around the school and up the lane without a bother.

The advert and subsequent comments are now saying to me - nice horse, been started, got a bit much, frightened the owner, turned out, needs to go.

she said she's just doing exams then if he doesnt sell she will transport him to sell but his kept away from home at the moment and maybe shes just trying to sell before she has to pay dealers fees. is project horses for problem horses then?

Agree something is not right here. Walk away. You will soon find something else. We have all been there and looked at adverts thinking they are just what we want only to find out they are not
Please be sensible and don't let your mom regret buying you a horse :):)

Yup, project horses is for "project" horses. Not necessarily problem ones (although I believe it was originally set up for those) but ones that aren't just straightforward and ready to go. If you were looking for a get-on-and-go, you wouldn't look on that site. When it was first set up, it only had project/problem horses, although some people now seem to not realise that and treat it like it's a normal horse sales site.

is project horses problem horses then? i asked for more pics but shall i just say no thanks had a think and not right? my friend got one form field for £4000 and was fine maybe im just a bit naive

Unless the owner will show him ridden, walk away.

I understand he may not be in work currently due to her time commitments, but unless there is something she is hiding, there is no reason she couldn't ride him for 5 minutes and at least show you walk and trot.

My horses aren't suitable for novices but I would happily get on both of them straight from a few months in the field.
