Am I hard or just realistic and humane?

I think 'easy' is the wrong word and I shouldn't have used it, I apologise, but perhaps I should have used 'right' - I think in that when you know it's the right thing to do and for any caring owner there is no alternative which makes it an easier decision; it's when it's a 'should we?' scenario that is by far the hardest to call.

I completely agree with you. I have just driven home for the second year in a row past a horse with a sunken back who stands in a laminitic stance all summer and has just started now, and all winter is clearly arthritic. That kind of owner makes me MAD  All they are doing is keeping a poor creature in physical pain so that they can avoid their own emotional pain. It's not on. If it goes on much longer I'm going to write a note and leave it taped to their gate.
